Troy was Hollywood garbage. The tone of the real Iliad is just too extreme for most people. Right off the bat Achilles praying for his army to die from quarrel over his noble-born sex slave.

What I think of most about the Iliad is how Homer gives back stories of warriors right as a spear is being driven through their face, emphasizing the tragic aspect to punctuate and better appreciate the violence. The movie Gallipoli feels closer to it, being mostly backstory of a troop cut down by machine gun fire, but that movie seems to find the violence regrettable. The horror aspect is indulged by Homer while glorying in battle. No Marvel comics sentimentality like in Troy.

There's an idea in the atheist movement that God is a chain weighing people down, and that if it's broken and people stop contorting themselves in a mental game of Twister to "fit" the world around their theology, that they would be free to self-actualize better and live better lives.

This isn't a lefty Reddit atheist thing either, the right wing Randian/Neitchzean types basically hold the same position.

Just from an observational standpoint and without trying to argue metaphysics this is clearly not true for 99.9% of people. For the overwhelming majority of people atheism is like surgically removing your equilibrium and then trying to achieve not just equal but better balance through first principles. Yeah that does not work and if it does for you, you are an extreme outlier who you cannot draw any useful general heuristics from.

I think this is basically what Jordan Peterson makes arguments for but for whatever reason doesn't want to state it directly which is why he tends to be evasive when the actual more difficult metaphysical arguments for God get brought up.

To be clear my argument from this point doesn't extend out to "therefore start lying and LARP as a Christian even if you don't actually believe" for those reading this, but more about recognizing the objective failure of secular moral systems broadly and to at least being open to Bible stuff at a minimum on a Jungian level.
