Introducing the TCDT: Diagnosing What Truly Sticks
This is the foundation of the Threshold Concept Diagnostic Toolkit (TCDT) at Sigma-Ed — helping trainers identify exactly where learners are in relation to the concepts that matter most.

If you can't name a concept, your learners probably can't retain it.
Without looking at your course — name the 3–5 concepts at the heart of what you teach.
- Not the topics.
- The transferable ideas.
The Hidden Equity Crisis in Curriculum Design
In low-resource training contexts, concept-light curricula don't just produce shallow learning.
They reproduce disadvantage. 🔴
Making concepts explicit is an equity intervention.
Erickson and Lanning gave us a test:
Check one of your learning outcomes
a. Can it complete this sentence?
"Learners will understand that…"
b. Does it contain at least two related concepts ?
c. Is it transferable beyond where it was taught?
Most outcomes fail all three.
Facts vs. Concepts (Bruner 1960)
A fact tells you what.
A concept tells you why — and it travels & grows
It works in situations you've never seen before.
That's the difference between training that sticks and training that doesn't.
Your Training Isn't Broken. Your Curriculum Is.
Most training fails before it starts.
- Not because trainers aren't skilled.
- Not because learners aren't motivated.
Because the curriculum was built around content — not concepts.
A thread. 🧵
