worksop’s oldest pub - The Old Ship

supposedly, incorporated within its structure are wooden beams from ships that fought in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, giving the pub its name

but the Old Ship reportedly predates the battle of Trafalgar & could be around 400 years old!

sadly, the pub has no owner and has been closed for several years

so if there are any wannabe pub owners out there... 👀

we’re into our second week of activity for The Places In Between: LCN>SHF and we’ve finally gotten round to making a twitter account. this week project director @callum_berridge has been in Gainsborough doing some field research

the project will be completed by June & will be contained within a free app released in July! keep ur eyes peeled 👀

we didnt post last weekend (cos we didnt have a twitter account) so we wanted to do a throwback to last Saturday when we visited the small Lincolnshire village of Saxilby

Saxilby is perhaps most famous for the Fossdyke Canal, the oldest canal in the UK - believe it or not, the Fossdyke was dug during the time of the ancient Romans!

the Fossdyke connected the River Trent to the city of Lincoln. it also drained marshland, creating fertile farmland

in fact Gainsborough wasnt just the capital of England - it was the capital of the North Sea Empire which included Denmark & Norway & North Sea trading routes

Sweyn died after just 5 weeks as King, but his son Cnut succeeded him and became one of England’s most famous monarchs

did you know that in 1013AD Gainsborough was the capital of England?

a little over a millennia ago the Viking King Sweyn Forkbeard sailed into the Humber Estuary, up the River Trent & landed in Gainsborough, proclaiming himself king of England, Norway & Denmark

Gainsborough sits beside the mighty River Trent. on one side of the Gainsborough Bridge is North Notts & the constituency of Bassetlaw. on the Gainsborough side is Lincolnshire and the district of West Lindsey
