@SimonWhistler I think we need a casual criminalist episode about Charles Whitman, the 1966 “Texas Tower Sniper”.
Came across his name in Robert Sapolsky’s wonderful (if epically long) book “Behaviour” on the biology of human behaviour and it sounds like an interesting story
@davidmcw
We have a problem with natural monopolies and oligopolies in Australia. Is it feasible to levy an additional tax on companies who control more than a given % of their market? and has this ever been done before in other places?
@davidmcw regarding people being willing to buy crypto- the simplest explanation can be found in my Grandad’s sage advice:
“No one ever went broke underestimating human intelligence”
@davidmcw just listened to your opioids episode; I’m curious whether weed might be a substitute for opioids (rather than a gateway) in states where it is legal. I recall a study mentioned in the economist some years ago found meth use was higher in counties where booze was banned
@sydneemcelroy@Sawbones Just listened to your appendicitis episode. I can confirm that medical officers going to work at the Australian Antarctic base have their appendix removed before leaving Australia as there is usually only 1 MO at the base
@MattNT11 Summer in Canberra is pretty much the first 2 weeks of January, all the rest of the year is “potential winter” where the temperature may not hit double digits 🥶
Ah it’s that time of year when we can listen to American music while we drive our Ford to McDonald’s and complain about how American Halloween is when we see kids in costume 🤣
It's #WorldHeartDay today and we @RoyalFlyingDoc would like to emphasise prioritising our health and wellbeing in such a fast-paced world. Did you know? Approximately 100 Australians are victims of a stroke every day.
Excitedly planning for the Yarning up After Stroke Family Fun Day at Tamworth on Saturday 8th October 2022. Supported by @strokefdn @HNEHealth @HMRIAustralia @nhmrc and many other community groups helping on the day.
I have a bone to pick with whoever decided to use the Greek “hyper” and “hypo” prefixes for high- and low- blood pressure, blood sugar, temperature etc. They sound almost identical! The Latin equivalents would be “super” and “infra”; much easier to tell apart over the phone!
Politics doesn't have to be like it was in last night's debate. We can return to sensible, responsible leadership on climate, integrity, productivity, tax reform, higher education, refugees, and the fair treatment of women. We just need to vote in independents.
My wife is currently involved in a show of Lysistrata in Newcastle (show times to follow) and it has me curious;
Will many American women start a #sexstrike if #RoeVWade is overturned? 😂
@synapse101 Our youngest went through a stage when she was about 2 when she would not sleep until she had run about 2kms down to a skate park, then slid down the ramps there for a while and finally been carried home (usually at about 11pm by this stage)
