Enzo Maresca was recommended to City director of football Txiki Begiristain by Manuel Pellegrini years ago.

Maresca played for Pellegrini at Malaga and worked with him as a coach at West Ham.

Begiristain suggested to the City academy that Maresca was somebody who could be U23's coach, and possibly work with and/or replace Guardiola one day.

After working as Guardiola's assistant in 2022-23, he has now been announced as his successor.

"It's a huge challenge for many reasons," Maresca says. "All the success over the last 10-15 years. It's very exciting because the target is to continue."

"Il y a des choses que je n’ai pas encore faites et que j’ai envie de faire. Mon père est toujours en vie (94 ans), et je veux passer davantage de temps avec lui dans ces dernières années.

Mes enfants… Et beaucoup d’autres choses, en tant qu’être humain, que je peux faire. J’ai la chance de pouvoir choisir, c’est pour ça que j’ai pris cette décision.

Écoutez, j’adore mon travail. Jusqu’au dernier match contre Bournemouth, quand on a gagné la FA Cup, ou peu importe. J’aime ça.

Mais j’ai envie de faire autre chose, vous voyez ? Pour une fois, je ne sais pas combien de temps ça durera.

J’ai envie d’apprendre, parce que c’est un processus, j’ai envie d’apprendre à faire autre chose. C’est aussi simple que ça.

Je pense qu’aujourd’hui, la vie offre une incroyable diversité de choses à faire. Avant, on ne pouvait pas voyager aussi souvent.

Je ne vais pas aux concerts, je ne vais pas au théâtre, je ne vais pas au cinéma. Je ne fais pas beaucoup de choses que j’ai simplement envie de faire. Je veux apprendre à vivre une vie différente.

Il y a beaucoup de choses que je vais faire. J’ai plein d’idées en tête. Et bien sûr, je continuerai à suivre le football, à regarder mon Manchester City, mon Barcelone, mon Bayern Munich.

Les grands matchs, je les regarderai toujours. Le football fait partie de ma vie, je ne peux pas m’en détacher complètement à 100 %. Jour après jour, jour après jour, jour après jour… j’ai simplement besoin de faire une pause. C’est tout."
