A 13-year-old was hired to play a blind date in exactly one episode. The character landed so hard that the show reshot its season teasers, rebuilt itself around him, and eventually erased one of its own children to make room.

Family Matters wasn't supposed to be about Steve Urkel. It was a Perfect Strangers spinoff built around Harriette Winslow, the elevator operator. Twelve episodes in, Jaleel White walks through the door as Laura's blind date with a one-episode contract.

The studio audience reaction changed everything. Producers wrote him into the very next episode. In his memoir, White says they went back and reshot new teasers for the season featuring him prominently, as if he'd been an original cast member all along. By season 2 he was a series regular. By season 3 the whole show orbited him.

Which brings us to Judy Winslow.

Jaimee Foxworth played the family's youngest daughter for four seasons. As Urkel swallowed more screen time, producers decided she wasn't adding to storylines. So they didn't write her off. They just stopped. No goodbye episode, no line of dialogue explaining where she went. She walked upstairs one day and the Winslows spent five more seasons acting like they'd never had a third kid.

The show ran nine seasons and 215 episodes. The woman it was created for became a supporting player in her own spinoff, and a series regular got deleted without a sentence of explanation.

A sitcom doesn't follow its premise. It follows the laughs. And it will quietly rewrite an entire family to chase them.
