@zeynep Issue is your test is as good as your sample. Virus can live outside the body on hard surfaces for days, so contaminating your own test if handling with virus on your hands is possible. Likewise, if you don’t swab well enough or follow directions, you could get false negatives.

@zeynep Having experience with sterile isolation protocols (to avoid falsely contaminating tests), I tested four of my family members over Xmas on days 5,6,7. (All vaccinated, one boostered). If Day1 is first positive, none of them tested negative until Day8. But it was consistent.

@pkafka @zeynep You can test positive for a long time with PCR even if you are too far out for it to be contagious because the testing process amplifies the DNA of the virus that may still be there. Antigen tests are picking up virus that you are shedding meaning you are contagious.
