Keith Wilson: Alberta's independence movement is gaining momentum

Alberta's independence movement is gaining ground this summer, said Keith Wilson, the King's Counsel lawyer now widely seen as the driving force behind the province's referendum push, on Thursday's episode of The Ezra Levant Show.

Wilson leads Let Alberta Decide, a third-party advertiser registered with Elections Alberta that has emerged as a central hub in the referendum campaign after a court ruling set aside an earlier petition drive led by the Alberta Prosperity Project.

"We've raised well over a quarter of a million dollars in less than a month," Wilson said, adding that his group is leading all fundraising among registered campaign entities.

A sold-out Stampede breakfast organized on short notice drew more than a thousand attendees last weekend, many of them newcomers to the independence cause. Wilson said a large sign campaign for Calgary and a new digital strategy are next.

Wilson raised concerns about the fairness of Elections Alberta's enforcement, noting that Unifor and Thomas Lukaszuk's Forever Canada campaign have not registered as third-party advertisers despite visible campaign infrastructure.

"No observer can look at the facts here and conclude that's what's happening," Wilson said of the elections body's claimed impartiality.

Much of the discussion turned to recent pipeline announcements between Premier Danielle Smith, Prime Minister Mark Carney and B.C. Premier David Eby. Wilson argued that the deals, rather than undercutting the independence movement, have accelerated it. He pointed to a new provision allowing British Columbia to toll Alberta oil moving through the Trans Mountain pipeline — a measure economist Jack Mintz has publicly labelled extortion.

"Let's call it what it is: extortion," Wilson said, citing Mintz's analysis.

Wilson also cited a Fraser Institute study released June 25, concluding that new carbon capture costs and industrial carbon taxes tied to the Pathways Alliance project would make Alberta's oil, gas and electricity uncompetitive against the United States, with costs applied to existing production immediately rather than only new output.

"These are self-inflicted economic wounds," Wilson said.

He estimated the combined cost of the proposed $40-billion pipeline and roughly $25-billion Pathways project at close to $70 billion, comparable to Alberta's entire annual budget.

Wilson pushed back on Calgary Mayor Jeremy Farkas, who released a video citing a Calgary Chamber of Commerce estimate that separation could cost the province's economy up to $62 billion a year. Wilson noted fewer than three per cent of surveyed businesses reported concern, while Meta's recently announced $13-billion data centre investment in Alberta undercuts the mayor's argument.

"He's obviously seeking favour and doing Ottawa's bidding," Wilson said of Farkas.

Wilson pointed to a Royal Bank of Canada study from two months ago that found more than a trillion dollars in investment left Canada under federal Liberal policy.

"Through independence we will create certainty," Wilson said. "We'll elect the politicians here in Alberta that will make the laws for Albertans, and if they don't do a good job, we'll unelect them."

New poll proves Rebel News is Canada's fastest growing news source

Pollara, one of Canada's major polling companies, has released its fourth annual Trust in Media survey. The results show, for the fourth year in a row, Rebel News is getting stronger.

@EzraLevant walked through the numbers on Wednesday's episode of The Ezra Levant Show.

The number of Canadians who watch Rebel News daily has doubled in the past year, with 8% of Canadians now say they watch on most days, and another 14% watching occasionally — a combined reach of 22% of the country.

For comparison, the Globe and Mail, founded in 1844, backed by millions in government subsidies, and owned by Canada's wealthiest oligarch, sits at 11% daily readership.

"I think there's a real chance we'll catch up with them next year," Ezra said, "even though they've had a 171-year head start."

The numbers among Gen Z are even more striking. In the 18- to 34-year-old demographic, 14% say they watch Rebel News on most days. The Globe and Mail's daily readership in that same age group is also 14%.

"As many young people watch Rebel News as read the Globe," Ezra said. "Our little band of citizen journalists. Wow." He noted that Rebel News's marketing budget is close to zero, and growth has come entirely through word of mouth.

The trust numbers tell a similar story.

In 2023, Rebel News had a net trust score of minus 8 — meaning more Canadians distrusted it than trusted it. In 2026, that number is even. Among Canadians who actually watch Rebel News, the trust score has climbed from 57% to 72% over three years.

The Globe and Mail's trust score among its own readers is 74%. "We're almost in a tie with them," Ezra said.

Perhaps most surprisingly, Rebel News's net trust score among Liberal voters is minus 3. "Almost as many Liberals trust us as don't," Ezra said.

Throughout its 11-year history, Rebel News has never taken a cent in government funding. Instead, Ezra noted the company has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars fighting the government over issues like censorship and defending journalists who have been arrested while on assignment.

“Canadians notice,” Ezra said, “and they like it.”

Meanwhile, accusations of alleged corruption and financial mismanagement within the Îyârhe Nakoda (Stoney Nakoda) First Nation—comprising the Bearspaw, Chiniki, and Goodstoney bands in Alberta—center on a lack of financial transparency by band leadership, specifically regarding the handling of multi-million dollar trust funds and the non-disclosure of leadership salaries.

Major incidents and concerns regarding Stoney Nakoda governance include:

-Band Members' Lawsuit for Transparency: In June 2023, members representing all three of the Stoney Nakoda nations filed a lawsuit in court against the Nation. The plaintiffs demanded the release of mandated financial disclosure documents under the First Nations Financial Transparency Act (FNFTA) for the years 2018 through 2022. Band members raised concerns that tens of millions of dollars were withdrawn from the Stoney Heritage Trust Fund without community consultation, while leadership's financial reports were not published.

Defamation Lawsuits: Leadership has previously pushed back aggressively against critics; in 2018, the Stoney Nakoda chiefs and council filed a $1-million defamation lawsuit against a band member who spoke out and protested against a proposed land deal.

-Health Services Fraud: While leadership has been accused of misusing funds, the Nation has also been a victim of internal administrative corruption. In 2021, the former CEO of Stoney Health Services, Ellis Quarshie, was sentenced to prison and ordered to pay full restitution after pleading guilty to trust fraud for creating a bogus billing scheme that defrauded the Nation of over $450,000 between 2008 and 2016
