The European Commission (EC) has plan to lend 5 billion Euros to Egypt in coming years, including 1 billion this year & they’re rushing to get it through with minimal scrutiny & little regard for concerns of members states. This is worrying. A 🧵 on what needs to happen
I don't normally write a thread on why you should apply for a job with us at @TimepDC but this is literally the job I once hoped TIMEP would create for me when I was a fellow and now, as Deputy Director, I'm very excited we're creating it for someone to join our team
A 🧵 on why
This might be the best explanation I heard for "why Oct 7" and, surprisingly, it comes from Ami Ayalon, former head of the Shin Bet, Israel's secret service, and commander-in-chief of the Navy.
Here what he says (this is the first video, there are a couple more below which you'll really want to watch):
He says the "most important cause [of Oct 7]" was "the political paradigm", whereby Israel's policy was "divide and rule", meaning Israel "had to make sure Palestinians would not have a unified leadership" and could therefore always say "nobody to talk with, nothing to talk about". Concretely "in order to do it [Israel] had to make sure Hamas would go on controlling Gaza and the Palestinian authority the West bank", and incite them to "fight each other". This is why Israel "enhanced and assisted Hamas, transferred money, etc."
As a result of all this Hamas "got the Palestinians' support" because "they became the only administration who fought against the Israeli occupation and for the purpose of Palestinian freedom" while Fatah and the Palestinian authority became perceived as "Israeli collaborators". In his assessment "between 70 to 80% of the Palestinians are supporting Hamas, only because Hamas is perceived as the one who fight for [their] freedom."
He says Israel completely misunderstood the situation before Oct 7 because it measures "hardware" whilst Hamas measures "software", meaning that after every fight between Israel and the Palestinians, success for Israel is measured in "losses in human life, in military installations, in military infrastructure" whereas what Hamas measures is "the support of the people." As an illustration he says that in May 2021 - when there was fighting during 2 weeks and around 300 Palestinians were killed (to 17 on the Israeli side) - Israel thought that Hamas "suffered a huge loss and a huge military defeat" but from Hamas's standpoint it was "a huge victory" because this led to Hamas, for the first time, getting "more than 50% of the support from the Palestinian people."
If Saudi Arabia, which has 15 Aramco employees on its national delegation and which is the largest oil exporter on Earth, is praising the #COP28 deal, that likely means it isn’t a good climate deal

Editor in Chief Lina Attalah has been summoned to appear for questioning before the Cairo Appeals Prosecution on Wednesday on charges that Mada Masr could not confirm, according to the news organization’s lawyer Hassan al-Azhari.
According to Azhari, the prosecution did not communicate the summons to Attalah, instead asking the Journalists Syndicate to inform Attalah that she would be questioned tomorrow as part of Case 22/2023.
The syndicate has requested the session be postponed, Khaled al-Belshy, the syndicate’s head, told Mada Masr.
Without any clear communication on the prosecution’s charges, Azhari told Mada Masr that he is uncertain of the charges. The lawyer said that he expects the charges to include “running a website without a license” and “publishing false news that could harm national security,” charges that the Supreme Media Regulatory Council (SMRC) also leveled at Attalah at the end of October.
The SMRC summoned Attalah on October 29 for a hearing that ended without an official decision. Later on the same day, the council issued a decision to officially block Mada Masr’s website on Egyptian internet service providers for six months and to refer the case to the Public Prosecution for “practicing media activities without a license” and “publishing false news without checking its sources.”
Following the October hearing, Atallah confirmed that she and Mada Masr are committed to internationally recognized media codes of conduct and the strict professional standards followed by Mada Masr, and its editorial team’s belief in the public’s right to knowledge.
On October 15, the SMRC announced a decision to investigate Mada Masr and to notify the Public Prosecutor if violations were proven, “after the Council received numerous complaints accusing the site of publishing inflammatory reports to harm Egyptian national security.”
In the decision to summon Attalah, the council pointed to a Mada Masr report outlining potential scenarios of the forced displacement of Palestinians from Gaza, within the context of Israel’s ongoing aggression on the strip.
“I cannot bear Netanyahu, he’s a liar,” Sarkozy told Obama, unaware that the microphones in their meeting room had been switched on, “You’re fed up with him, but I have to deal with him even more often than you,” replied Obama (2011). Now Blinken👇🏼
Here's a thread outlining the geopolitical situation around the Israel-Gaza war its possibilities, impossibilities, and possible outcomes. Heads up, it's my longest thread yet. It's also raw, unedited, and unevenly paced. Sorry, none of us are well but at least we're trying

Something is changing in America
I saw Dave Chappell last night at Boston TD Garden. It was sold out so I would say 22,000 people there. 3/4 into the show he said I want to address what’s going on in Palestine and Israel.
He specifically said Palestine and said it before Israel. He said what happened on October 7 wasn’t right but also what’s going on isn’t right and not just. You can’t kill innocent civilians like that and the whole world sits silently and watches. Then someone shouted at him from the crowd shut the F up Dave. He then went nuts and yelled back no you shut the F up. you don’t take tens of billions from my country to go kill innocent women and children and come and tell me to shut the F up.
He said don’t come begging for money from my country and then go drop bombs on children and cut off innocent people water and electricity. You have the audacity to pay to come see me and then tell me shut the F up no you shut the F up. The crowd started clapping and cheering for him and saying yes Dave and chants of free Palestine and then he said you’re damn right free Palestine.
He went on a 15 minutes rant about being a Muslim and that the Israelis are projecting what’s wrong with them on Muslims and the crowd kept on cheering. It was surreal.
Crowd was typical Boston demographic 80% white. 5% black and the rest Latin and others.

Now there is a social media rumor in Egypt that Google Maps removed the word “Sinai” because “Google is complacent in the displacement plan”. The amount of fake news and info is astounding. #Gaza
