A custom domain email. Zero cost. 30 minutes.

While building Minttr, I realized something small but important: emailing users from
[email protected] feels completely different from emailing them from a random Gmail address.

A custom domain email is probably the simplest way to look professional as a one-person
company.

But I didn't want to pay for Google Workspace or Zoho, and I definitely didn't want to run my
own mail server. After some research, I found a fully free setup. Sharing it here for anyone
building their own product.

How it works

Three tools, each doing one thing:

- Cloudflare Email Routing — handles receiving (forwards emails sent to [email protected] to your
Gmail)
- Resend — handles sending (provides SMTP so Gmail can send as your domain)
- Gmail — your everyday email client, where everything comes together

Once set up: you send and receive [email protected] emails right inside Gmail. No difference
from using a regular Gmail account.

Step 1: Cloudflare — Set up email forwarding

Prerequisite: your domain's DNS is managed by Cloudflare.

1. Cloudflare Dashboard → select your domain → Email Routing
2. Enable Email Routing — Cloudflare will automatically add the required MX and SPF records
3. Add a forwarding rule: [email protected] → your Gmail address
4. Check Gmail for a verification email and confirm

Done. All emails sent to [email protected] will now show up in your Gmail inbox.

One thing: forwarded emails will likely land in spam at first. Adding a DMARC record helps:

Name: _dmarc
Content: v=DMARC1; p=none;

Step 2: Resend — Set up SMTP for sending

Cloudflare Email Routing only handles incoming mail, not outgoing. To send emails from
[email protected] via Gmail, you need an SMTP service.

Resend's free tier gives you 3,000 emails per month — more than enough for personal
communication.

1. Sign up at https://t.co/7BmXrt7aap
2. Add your domain — Resend will give you a few DNS records (DKIM, SPF) to add in Cloudflare
3. If your domain is on Cloudflare, Resend supports one-click auto-connect, which is nice
4. Wait for DNS verification to complete
5. Create an API Key and save it

Don't forget to update your domain's SPF record to include Resend:

Step 3: Gmail — Configure "Send mail as"

Last step: connect Resend's SMTP to Gmail.

1. Gmail → Settings → Accounts and Import → Send mail as → Add another email address
2. Enter your domain email, e.g. [email protected]
3. SMTP details:

Server: https://t.co/avCabPMSC0
Port: 465 (SSL)
Username: resend
Password: your Resend API Key

4. Gmail will send a verification email to your domain address → Cloudflare forwards it to
your Gmail → click the verification link
5. (Optional) Set it as your default sending address

That's it. When composing an email in Gmail, you can now pick [email protected] from the
"From" dropdown.

One more thing

If you plan to send product update emails (newsletters, changelogs, etc.) down the road, I'd
recommend using a subdomain for those, like [email protected].

Bulk emails are more likely to get flagged as spam. If that happens on your main domain, it
can hurt your domain's reputation and affect your normal one-on-one emails too. Using a
subdomain keeps that risk separate.

Resend's free tier only supports one domain, so if you need both personal emails and product
emails, you can sign up for two accounts — one for the main domain, one for the subdomain.

To sum up

A custom domain email sounds like a small thing, but for a one-person company, it's the first
impression you give your users.

The whole setup:
- Zero cost (all within free tiers)
- 30 minutes to configure
- No server needed
- Never leave Gmail

More practice with Agentic AI (OpenCode) and I testify already. But I'm deliberating working up gradually from simple tasks to complex. Currently prompting it much like an LLM chatbot to fix just one issue at a time. Will get to massive orchestration soon enough I hope.
