Blindspots to an executive leader are like cigarettes to the body… they’ll both slowly kill you.
What makes blindspots so dangerous is that, well, you're blind to them, you can’t see them. You often aren't even aware of them.
They hide in the behaviors you justify… the patterns you overlook… the truths you avoid.
And while you might experience success in spite of them for a while, those blindspots keep compounding quietly until they eventually show up in your performance.
Great leaders don’t act like they have it all figured out. They actively seek out the hard truth about where they can get better.
The only way to expose blindspots is through strong feedback & feedforward loops, it's a guaranteed way to sustain high performance.

The “Time-to-Action” Gap
The best organizations turn ideas into execution, fast.
Acknowledging what needs to be done to improve performance is only the first step.
The real differentiator is how quickly your team can turn that insight into action.
Shrinking the gap between acknowledging what needs to be done to improve, and taking said actions to actually improve, is one of the greatest skills a team can have.

To be a better leader, be a better listener.
One of the biggest oversights I see leadership teams make is underestimating what can learned from INSIDE their organizations.
The best leaders stay in learning mode. Here's a simple way to do it ⬇️
Regularly meet with team members several layers beneath the top leadership level. Don't just check-in, be intentional about listening and learning.
Use these 4 questions to surface insights:
👉 What’s improved the most in the past six months, and what drove the improvements?
👉 Where are we not making enough progress, and what can we do to accelerate it?
👉 What part of the business is moving in the wrong direction, and why?
👉 What’s something you’re afraid no one is telling me, but you believe I need to know?
You’ll be amazed at how much insight will come from those closest to the work.

The mindset that builds championship teams, is the same one that builds great companies.
I love sports because they’re filled with leadership lessons that translate directly to business performance.
As an executive and business coach, I’m a bit biased to being most interested in how great coaches show up and are able to get the best out of their teams.
Lately, I’ve become a big fan of Curt Cignetti, head football coach at the University of Indiana. No one’s ever called Indiana a football powerhouse… but he's transforming the program and under his leadership, that’s starting to change. At the time of this writing, Indiana is currently ranked #2 in the country.
I recently heard him talking about what it's going to take for Indiana to keep getting better and become known as a top-tier program, and I loved his response because it’s applicable to business:
👉 Don't be affected by success OR failure.
👉 We must execute. Execution is everything.
👉 Never be satisfied, always focus on getting better.
👉 Have mental intensity for the task at hand, focus on one play at a time.
That’s not just football, that’s business. The best teams, organizations, and businesses I’ve seen share that exact same mentality.
They execute with discipline. They stay locked in on top priorities. They don’t ride the highs or get stuck in the lows. And they’re never satisfied, they want to find out what more they're capable of.
That’s what winning cultures look like... in sports and in business.

Culture is an invisible gravitational force inside every business.
It quietly shapes how organizations think, act, and perform.
When that force is strong, it pulls teams together to achieve remarkable results.
When it’s weak, even the best strategies feel like teams are pushing uphill against a headwind.
As famously said, "culture eats strategy for breakfast". But a strong culture won't build itself.
Therefore, a key strategy for every leadership team is to intentionally develop & nurture a strong organizational culture.

Focus is a superpower that every business can access…
Yet few ever develop the discipline to effectively leverage it.
Focus is the ultimate amplifier. The organizations that understand this and make focus their reality... WIN.

Good Strategy = Good Positioning
Good strategy at its core, is simply putting your organization in the best position for success.
When your business is in a strong strategic position, you’ll have more good options to choose from.
When you’re in a bad position, every option feels unideal.
A framework I use to help businesses optimize positioning, that then improves strategy, is identifying the “core stack” ⬇️
👉 Core Purpose: Why do we exist?
👉 Core Values: What do we stand for?
👉 Core Competencies: What are we best in class at?
👉 Core Customer: Who benefits most from what we do, and why?
👉 Core Market: What area of the market is most in need for what we do better than our competitors?
When there’s organizational alignment on these “core” areas, creating a good strategy gets significantly easier.

Scaling a business is more about concentration, and less about expansion.
The (not so secret) secret to scale isn’t more. It’s less, done better.
You can’t scale a system that’s complex and unfocused.
Simplicity is what makes focused execution possible.

Be a Learning Machine.
The best leaders aren’t the ones with all the answers, they’re the ones who never stop learning.
When you stay a curious student of your field or industry, you build a competitive advantage.
This advantage makes you more agile and able to adjust, so when the next big wave of change or evolution rolls in, you'll be ready to surf it.
"Smart people learn from everything and everyone, average people learn from their experiences, stupid people already have all the answers."

Business isn’t a spectator sport.
The real lessons are learned in the arena.
Strategy sessions & planning meetings are valuable up to a certain point, but they have to be put to work in the real world.
The market is the arena. That’s where you test, build, fail, and learn.
If you’re not actively in the arena, all the learning you’re doing will be too abstract and unproven, and it may never give you the lessons you really need.

The strongest goals should feel a little impossible.
If your team is 100% confident they’ll hit a goal, I’ve got bad news... that’s not a goal, that’s a checklist.
I help organizations implement the goal-setting concept of "the 50% Confidence Rule", where your team is only 50% (or less) sure they can hit a target that requires them to stretch.
I've found this to be the sweet spot. It forces prioritization, sharpens focus on what truly matters, and pushes teams out of their comfort zones.
And the added bonus, even if you miss, you still win. Because your team only gets stronger by chasing something they didn’t think was possible.

Discipline looks boring in the moment.
It’s only in hindsight that you see how quiet, consistent discipline is able to build extraordinary success.

Pain + Reflection = Progress
I’ve seen this Ray Dalio principle play out as a differentiator over and over again in business.
Pain is just feedback. It’s the market telling you something isn’t working, a process breaking under pressure, or a customer showing you where you didn't meet expectations.
Don't avoid reflecting on the pain, that's where you'll find the gold. Slow down to ask:
👉 What really caused this?
👉 What’s the critical lesson here?
👉 How can we apply the learnings to new actions that will ensure we get better from this?
Pain is the teacher, reflection is being a good student.
The best companies treat pain like data, learning from it to get stronger. Average companies just hope it goes away.

The ultimate leadership audit... Would YOU invest in YOU?
Evaluate your own leadership & the way you run your organization through the lens of a savvy investor.
Great leadership hygiene is frequently asking ourselves the awareness-raising question:
👉 "Am I someone I would want to bet on?"

"It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent. It is the ones that are most adaptable to change."
I love this Charles Darwin quote because it perfectly applies to business.
Markets shift. Technology evolves. Customer expectations change. Competitors re-invent themselves.
The businesses that last are the ones best able to adapt.
We have to assume that change will only accelerate in the future. So the ability to adapt is not a luxury, it's a requirement for survival.
#executive #business #coaching #performance #mindset
Complexity kills. Simplicity scales.
Complexity adds friction. Simplicity creates focus.
Behind every business that has successfully scaled, you’ll find leaders that were able to convert complexity into simplicity for their organizations.
I’ve yet to find an exception.

Recovery is a performance-enhancing activity.
Hustle culture says the answer is to grind harder, do more, and keep pushing. While hard work is a requirement to achieve, it’s not the entire story.
An often under-appreciated element to sustained high performance is strategic recovery.
That’s the big idea behind the book Peak Performance by Brad Stulberg & Steve Magness:
Elite performers (in both sports & business) don’t just work & train hard... they rest & recover with equal intention.
Stress + Rest = Growth
I’ve been putting this concept into practice by enhancing my own recovery protocol through learning & incorporating transcendental meditation (TM).
It’s been a game changer!
Just look at the proof.
The WHOOP data from my meditation sessions show real, measurable drops in stress and improved heart rate recovery after both morning and afternoon meditations.
Recovery isn’t “self-care.” It’s a strategic performance-enhancing activity.
To elevate your performance, decision-making, and leadership capacity, recovery deserves the same level of focus you give to execution & strategy.
Your next level may not come from doing more, it might come from recovering better.

The most overlooked form of intelligence for high performance is not IQ or EQ... it's Organizational Intelligence (OQ).
Leaders who are able to execute at a world-class level have strong OQ.
OQ is your ability to understand how your organization really works.
OQ is not just understanding the org chart, it's more about:
💡 Understanding where influence really lives
💡 What motivates key stakeholder groups to say yes (or no)
💡 Knowing what matters most & being in alignment with top organizational initiatives
💡 Learning how to effectively navigate internal politics, so that credibility, trust, and reputational capital is there when / if you ever need it
Building OQ is how you create momentum across teams, drive alignment, and getting the right people focused on what moves the needle.
OQ is the intelligence of execution. And in today’s business climate, the ability to execute is the ultimate edge.
That’s why OQ might be the most underrated forms of intelligence in leadership today.
