According to @StateStreet (5.6 TRILLION AUM), the answer is: No—a yen carry trade structural unwind is unlikely. In 2024, JP Morgan estimated that the unwinding was already 50-60% complete. Richard Katz's Japan Economy Watcher argues that fears of a yen carry trade unwind, destabilizing US finances, are overblown, as most of the trade has already dissipated since the Bank of Japan's 2024 rate hikes. Japanese interest rates have risen gradually rather than skyrocketed (with US Treasury yields remaining flat in a narrow range despite this). Any remaining effects from reduced Japanese capital inflows to the US are minor compared to other global factors, while the dollar's recent modest decline occurs from historically elevated levels without signaling a crisis.
