๐ฅ Our favorite constraint at Transforming Basketball
๐ง The "Floor is Lava" constraint creates better spacing by forcing players to escape the paint, encouraging smarter positioning and movement without the ball.
๐ Players love it. Coaches see results.

Resistance Dribbling ๐ช
Partner ball-handling activity where the defender applies resistance and disruption while the offensive player maintains control of the ball. Adjust the amount and direction of resistance to create different problems for the ball-handler.
Split Action 2v2 โ๏ธ
2v2 small-sided game built around split action from the post. The offense can cut, screen, slip or react to how the defense covers the action, allowing solutions to emerge from the interaction rather than following a predetermined pattern.
Frogger ๐ธ
Snake dribble activity where players have to navigate live traffic before finishing at the basket. The moving players create different gaps and timings on every repetition, encouraging the ball-handler to scan and adapt their drive.
Balloon Post-Up ๐
Post-up warm-up where players compete for position while keeping a balloon in the air. The additional task creates variability while players manage contact, body positioning and attention at the same time.
2-on-2, Only Score off Gets In A Restricted Space
Constraining the space leads to harder offensive decision-making, making it more realistic for the offense vs venturing into unrealistic spacings that won't exist in 5-on-5 play.
Many teams waste the first 5 seconds of the shot clock upon gaining possession. This blog breaks down how to play with intentionality in transition to avoid being 'stuck in neutral.'

Snowman Shooting โ๏ธ
Partner shooting activity challenging players to organise their hands underneath the ball before flowing directly into their shot. Change the starting position, distance or angle to create variability between reps.
Many coaches state that their players must be taught something in order to do this. But does this align with common sense and what actually happens when watching them play?
๐ก๏ธ Looking to improve your players' ball handling, the ability to screen and seal, AND the skill of navigating screens defensively?
Shield Tag is a multi-dimensional SSG which hits ALL these concepts.
Josh Fan spoke about why he moved away from the dominant approach to embrace an ecological framework in basketball skills training.

We love using Cat and Mouse 1-on-1 with beginners! Great way to mix dribbling and finishing into the same SSG with an appropriate level of challenge.
Learn the constraints for using this SSG from Transforming Clinician Kerri Kuzbyt.
The problem with Read & React? It makes players memorize offensive patterns based on their teammates instead of reading defensive coverages. Discover the alternative to the read and react layers.

Here is a key constraint detail for running gets: must be one foot on or inside the 3PT line, otherwise it's a turnover.
Coaches - why do you think we use this constraint?
