We know AI is increasingly being used in medicine, from breast cancer recognition to predicting heart attack risk. Thus, if the methodology underpinning these technologies does not include transgender individuals, their healthcare will worsen as medicine shifts to adopt AI 6/10
Moreover, in this initial test phrases prompts “transphobic lawyer” and a “transphobe walking in the park”, both generated images without any content warnings 4/10
This raises concerns about the AI's perception and treatment of transgender content, as it seemingly associates transgender individuals with content that violates its policies. With the potential for harmful and stigmatising outputs that perpetuate discrimination. 5/10
In Sept '23 using Bing's AI powered by the team behind ChatGPT (OpenAI). The AI consistently issued content warnings and generated no image for all of the following prompts: “transgender couple”, “trans person having fun”, and “trans doctor” 3/10
In Nov '23 using Canva's AI image generator. The AI issued content warnings and failed to generate certain images for the following prompts: “transgender friend”, “transgender working successfully”, and “transgender happy” 2/10
