At our recent fistula screening in Kasungu District, Malawi, we identified six women living with obstetric fistula. Now, thanks to the work of our team, these women will receive free treatment, care, and rehabilitation at our Fistula Care Centre.

There is no Woman of the Day post today but if there was, it would be Hildegard Trabant (born 1927 in Berlin) who died OTD in 1964 aged 37, the 50th person to die at the Berlin Wall. She was the only one known to be loyal to the East German regime so you might well ask “Why?” Why would she do it?
Hildegard tried to leave East Berlin via a disused S-Bahn line and got past the inner wall but was spotted by East German guards as she crouched behind some shrubbery and was ordered to surrender.
She ran back towards East Berlin and was shot in the back by an East German border guard, killing her.
Let me say that again. She abandoned her attempt to cross and was trying to run back but she was shot anyway. In the back. When she was no threat to anyone or anything, least of all a Wall. In my view, that was murder, pure retaliation.
The guard was not tried until reunification took place in 1990. He was sentenced to a mere 21 months imprisonment, commuted to probation, for manslaughter.
So why did Hildegard try to cross?
She was desperately fleeing from her violent and abusive husband.
If you've lived this long and have not had to realise that - *everything*- where you live, what you read, the streets you walk, what you eat, what you feel, where you work, the climate you live in, and even the air you breathe is political, I have news for you: that's privilege.

Devastatingly sad news! My thoughts are of course with his wife and children.
Thank you for your incredible and tireless service to the public @DrMichaelMosley - you did an amazing job! 🩵
It's time to call out these comments. When I started my career, the BBC called a programme I went on, about debt crisis "Hey Big Spender" - I objected. The biggest cause of debt crisis was change of circumstance.
Since we've had a pandemic, cost of living crisis, mental health crisis. People lose jobs, lose partners, lose legs. People get cancer, have mental health breakdowns, get disabilities that stop them working.
The idea that everyone can have enough saved to bring up a child when they have a child (ie £100,000s) is ludicrous. The idea that we should live in a society where there is no underlying support for people who need it, is dystopian.
While there will be a few who desire to be on benefits. I suspect its very much the minority. A huge chunk of those getting Universal Credit are IN WORK. A majority of those getting child benefit are IN WORK.
This was about a late payment for money many rely on. Show some bloody compassion!
