95% of what I know about diets distilled:
There are only 5 diets that work
2x of only one macro
2x of two macros
1x of all macros

2 diets of one macro:
You can do diets where you have periods where you cycle a single macro (then go back to a more normal diet). The macros that work are fats or carbs.
These are the:
1. Heavy cream diet:

2. Honey diet:

... and Mark Bell's Sugar Diet, Freelee's Raw Til 4 / Frugivore Diet, Durian Rider's Sugar Diet, Noah Ryan's Fruit til Noon diet, etc.
The principle is that you get a metabolic hack in some way when your body sees no protein but high energy, whether the energy source be fat or carbs.
For the sugar diets, it's likely the liver seeing a ton of fructose and thinking it needs to ramp up energy metabolism to get enough protein.
For fatty diets, it's likely MCTs fulfilling the role of fructose.
The key is: high amounts of only one macro, but not protein.
(Protein alone would be rabbit starvation... but no one has tried the rabbit starvation diet yet??)

2 diets of two macros
Everyone has heard of these before.
1. Keto. (+protein)
2. Low fat diet. (+protein)
If you dig into the literature, these both work for nearly all metabolic health related conditions to a similar extent.
TL;DR: Biasing the body towards one energy source can be helpful.
In the case of mitochondrial dysfunction, carbs are sometimes not well-utilized and keto can work -- this is tied into the history of keto: it was used for epilepsy patients with mito dysfunction.
In the case of metabolic stress, carbs can be provide an efficient energy source and quiet the stress.
Very high protein diets with balanced carbs and fats do not seem to work very well in most cases. I believe the best way this could be done is with extremely satiating fats and carbs: only stearic acid (beef fat) and starch (rice/potatoes).

1 diet of all macros
1. This is calorie restriction.
You can eat whatever you want, as long as you starve yourself.
Specific fat/carb choices, such as seed oils and sugar vs. saturated fat and starch, can modify success here.
Reta, GLP-1s work most like this. And they work! Quite hard get the same results without drugs, but they work.
Ozempic showed horrible muscle loss results.
Reta showed much, much better muscle retention.
Soon, we'll have longevity-promoting drugs that make you lose fat and make you gain muscle. Be ready with your philosophy.

My health journey in a nutshell:
- have bacterial overgrowth
- go keto/carnivore to relieve symptoms
- clear bacterial overgrowth growth
- do fruit till noon and honey diet to fix tanked thyroid from keto
- figure out I still have histamine clearance issues due to low stomach acid caused by h. Pylori
- currently on a stack to remove h. Pylori.
Fix your gut and fix your life
Half of my time spent with clients lately is just removing bacterial overgrowths. Carnivore/keto may have cured the symptoms but they tanked the thyroid.
It was never the carbohydrate, It was the microbial dysbiosis, SIBO, h. Pylori.
