As we get older, do we need to train harder or do we need to train differently?
In this jiu-jitsu day in Kyoto, Japan, we slow things down and spend time working on a technique we genuinely want to improve.
We drill, add resistance step by step, roll, finish with HIIT, and make recovery part of the day too.
We still want to improve.
We still want to challenge ourselves.
But especially in our forties and beyond, we’ve started thinking more carefully about how we train—not because we want to avoid hard work, but because we want to understand techniques better, stay healthy, and keep coming back to the mat.
Whether you started BJJ after 40 or you’ve been training for years, maybe you’ve asked yourself the same question:
How hard do we really need to train to keep getting better?
And for us, jiu-jitsu isn’t only what happens on the mat.
It’s also the convenience store after training, washing our gis, taking time to recover, eating good food together, and building a life where we can keep enjoying jiu-jitsu for as long as possible.

Morning jiu-jitsu session done☀️
Training with Masa I trust, on the mats with a view of Toji Temple in Kyoto⛩️
Just good training, good partner, and a beautiful morning.
Grateful for days like this.
I’ve been eating persimmons almost every day lately. They’re so good🧡
Persimmons are in season right now, but the season is short.🍂
Gotta enjoy them while they’re here!
Beautiful flying Choi Bar from Kolby Gonzales! 🔥
Jun Yong Cho, a black belt under Yongwon Choi (the inventor of the Choi Bar), breaks it down for us :)
That's such an interesting question.
Of course I want to win Worlds, so I really had to think hard about this one.
My husband would probably fight through the pain to win.
Me? I'd want to do the same, but I'm not great with pain, so I'd probably tap pretty quickly. 😂
Even if my mind was telling me not to tap, I think my survival instinct would kick in and I'd tap before I even realized it!🤣
Morning jiujitsu training, work done.
Now just relaxing with some music.
I’ve always been into music and art too.
Just winding down and enjoying the night🌕
Yesterday was jiu-jitsu.
Today, we took it slow in the morning, did some cleaning, and went to Kiyotaki for a nice meal.
Just chilling and enjoying a simple day off🌿
