A mature black locust failed at a client's home last Friday, falling on the roof and damaging the chimney and plumbing exhaust. The lower stem hung over the rear extension, threatening to crush the single storey structure.

Apple scab or Venturia inaequalis, is a serious fungal disease of apple trees in Ontario. The disease infects a tree's foliage, blossoms and fruits. Dark-olive-to-black spots on fruits and leaves are the initial symptoms of apple scab. (1/4)

From late winter to early spring, black fruiting structures develop in leaves, which mature to release spores during wet periods as trees are flushing new growth. Heavy infections can defoliate and weaken your apple trees. (3/4)

Within a few years after treatment, an infested spruce tree can look beautiful again. Left untreated, a severe case of needle cast can lead to continual thinning and eventual decline of the affected tree if spring weather is conducive to infection year after year.

Rhizosphaera needle cast is caused by the fungus Rhizosphaera kalkhoffii and mostly occurs on spruces that are not being grown in their native habitat. The noticeable symptoms of needle cast is a browning and loss of the innermost needles on the lower branches of spruce trees...

..and eventual defoliation. The disease affects trees of all ages. Infection takes place in the spring, but symptoms are not visible until the following spring and summer. If left uncontrolled, the disease can eventually kill the tree. Needle cast diseases of spruce are treatable
