The National Archives of Sweden hold a document that should be shown to anyone who refers to Ukrainians as a ‘young nation’.

This is the original ‘Pacta et Constitutiones Legum Libertatumque Exercitus Zaporoviensis’ — the first Ukrainian constitution, drawn up by Hetman Pylyp Orlyk on 5 April 1710 in Bendery.

Now for a bit of maths. Orlyk’s constitution appeared 77 years before the US Constitution. It predated the constitutions of Poland and France by 81 years. At a time when absolutism still reigned in Europe, Ukrainians were already laying down the separation of powers, limits on the hetman’s authority, an independent judiciary and the rights of the Cossacks. Not as a gift from a monarch — but as a contract between free people and their government.

This is the answer to all the ‘experts’ who still talk about Ukraine as a ‘young nation’ that ‘suddenly emerged in 1991’. No, gentlemen. A nation that drafted one of the world’s first constitutions 316 years ago cannot be young.

And that is precisely why Moscow has been destroying our memory for centuries — burning archives, banning our language, and rewriting history. For it was vitally important to the empire that the world regarded us as ‘part of Russia’, rather than as a political culture more mature and far older than Russia itself. And the original copy of Orlyk’s constitution has survived only because it was kept in Sweden — beyond the reach of the empire’s grasp.

Я дружина загіблого іноземного добровольця. В пам'ять про нього, про нашу боротьбу до справедливості я намагаюся змінити те, щоб іноземни добровольці могли отримувати звання Героя України за здійснення геройского вчинку. Не для нього, для всіх іноземних добровольців.

Дуже прикро, що навіть при бажанні командирів подати добровольця на нагороду вони не можуть цього зробити через обмеження в законодавстві. Це не про особливе ставлення, це про рівність, про пам'ять про ніх, про іх вчинки.

Разом з блізкими інших іноземних добровольців та українськими юристами ми створили петицію. Але поки ми не зібрали навіть половині голосів, а залишилося лише 30 днів і петиція згорить. Це дуже сумно.

Я закликаю всіх небайдужих підтримати петицію та підписати ії. Це наша з вами шана до полеглих та живих іноземних добровольців. Знаю, що мій чоловік був би радий якщо б це вийшло змінити, тому я ще маю надію зібрати потрібни голоси.

In the photo on the left is an ordinary boy, a schoolboy from Brovary, who was only 13 years old. His name is Yelisey Ryabokon.

On the right is the hat the boy was wearing, completely riddled with bullets and shrapnel, as well as his white T-shirt, which he put on over his jacket to show the russians that he was a civilian.
However, the bullets from the russian soldiers pierced right through it.
This is a terrible reminder of what happened.
On March 11, 2022, Yelisey's family tried to escape from a village called Peremoha, which had already been captured by the Russians.
As they were driving, the Russian soldiers first waved at them, as if wishing them a safe journey.
But then, for no reason at all, they simply opened fire on the car full of people. When the column came under fire, Yelisey's mother and younger son were in one car, while the boy himself was riding in another.
The first car exploded after taking a direct hit from a shell; people started jumping out of the cabin and hiding.“I dragged the little one by the hood,” Inna recalled.

She hoped that her older son was alive and simply hadn’t managed to get out of the car. It was enough for her to glance at her son to understand: he had died instantly. The mother miraculously managed to survive and pull her younger son out from under the shelling.
At first, Yelisey was buried simply in someone’s vegetable garden in that village. Only after some time was the family able to transport his body back home to Brovary to bury him properly.
The coffin was never opened. His father Yevhen, who serves in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was never able to see his son one last time.

Yelisey’s mother Inna says: she wants the whole world to know what Russia has done in Ukraine. So that people remember every murdered child, every woman. So that Russia is held accountable for all these crimes.
Those who knew Yelisey say he was a very calm, polite, and always smiling boy.
In May of that year, he would have turned 14…

In reality, the boy is a resident of a local community in the Ivano-Frankivsk region. By his own initiative, he attends funerals of fallen Ukrainian soldiers as a sign of respect, carrying their portraits.

Importantly, in Ukraine, close relatives and family members do not carry portraits during funerals, this role is traditionally taken by members of the community.

“I watched the video where a Russian drone attacked a man, a woman, and their dog in the Kharkiv region. The Russians saw that they were civilians. The people were walking along the road with a white flag. Unfortunately, all of them died. The dog was still convulsing for a few seconds.

It’s worth repeating once again. The main target of the Russians in this war is civilians. War crimes are a deliberate policy of the Russians. This is how they fight. In Chechnya, Georgia, Syria, Mali, Libya, Ukraine. Pain is their tool of subjugation. The Russians deliberately inflict pain on the civilian population to break people’s resistance and occupy the country.

In 2014, we asked survivors from captivity what had caused their arrest. Yes, there were targeted groups they hunted deliberately. But many people who ended up in the basements couldn’t name a single reason. I’ll say more: you can be an ardent supporter of Russia, but if you’re a civilian on territory captured by Russia, your life means nothing.

Our mobile teams that arrived in the Kyiv region right after liberation heard people speak about the Russians with horror. They said they simply couldn’t believe the Russians were capazes of such things. And this was after the brutal torture-murders of Volodymyr Rybak in Horlivka and Reshat Ametov in Simferopol. After the cynical shooting of the green corridor near Ilovaisk.

It’s time to believe your own eyes. Sadly, there are still people who for some reason think that if they’re “apolitical,” nothing will happen to them. The Russians don’t care. When they shelled residential buildings in Mariupol with tanks, they weren’t particularly interested in the political views of the people who lived there.
Yes, you can deny reality for a while. But in war, the price of such denial can be very high.”

“Many people still confuse medieval Rus’ (Ruthenia) and modern russia, but they are not the same, neither historically, politically, nor culturally.

Rus’ (also known as Kyivan Rus' or Ruthenia) was the name of the ancient state founded in Kyiv in the 9th century by a Scandinavian dynasty of Rurikids (Igor and Olga (Ingvarr and Helga in Old Norse) were the founding couple). It was one of the most developed European powers of its time, a Christianized, literate, and trade-rich civilization that connected Byzantium with Northern Europe. In 1100, Kyiv was 4th largest city in Europe, times bigger than Paris or London.

Moscow, on the other hand, didn’t even exist until 1147, more than two centuries after Kyiv was already a flourishing capital. Its founder, Yuri Dolgorukiy, was a descendant of Kyivan rulers, and his grave is in Kyiv, not Moscow. You can literally visit it today. So Moskow was late colony of Rus', and that was the place where Kyiv royalty sent their least important members to rule, as it was kinda wild place by the standards of their time.

For hundreds of years, the territory around Moscow was known as Moskovia (Muscovy). It had a very different history and political trajectory. After being taken by Mongols in 1237, Muscovy was a vassal of the Golden Horde and later of the Crimean Khanate for over 450 years, paying tribute and adopting much of the political culture, administrative style, and even vocabulary from its steppe overlords.

Only in the early 1700s, during the reign of Peter I, did Muscovy rename itself the “Russian Empire”, deliberately appropriating the name Rus’ and its history to create the illusion of continuity. This was a political rebranding, not a historical fact.

So there is no direct political ancestry of modern Russia from Kyivan Rus’. Moskow was a colony of Rus controlled for just 90 years, then they were under a different rule for over 4 centuries. If anything, its governance, autocracy, and imperial expansion are closer to the legacy of the Golden Horde than to the democratic traditions and European orientation of ancient Rus’.

The truth is simple but important:

👉 Kyiv, not Moscow, is the cradle of Eastern Slavic civilization.
👉 Ukraine, not russia, is the rightful heir of Rus’.

And stealing that heritage is one of the reasons of this war. That's why putin talks about his version of history so much. Our very existence debunks his narratives.”

Arseniy Turbin was only 14 when he posted a YouTube video boldly opposing Putin & Russia's war on Ukraine.
A top student in math & physics, he dreamed of studying political science to fix his country. Instead, he became Russia's youngest political prisoner, arrested for distributing ~100 anti-Putin leaflets he'd printed himself—no orders, just conviction.
At 15, a Moscow military court sentenced him to 5 years in a juvenile colony under bogus "terrorism" charges for allegedly joining the Freedom of Russia Legion (a Russian unit aiding Ukraine).

Human rights group Memorial calls it pure repression.

Now 17, Arseniy's endured hell: beaten by cellmate Azizbek (punched in bed, head shoved in toilet), poisoned by others, isolated in solitary, lost 17kg from stress & barely eating.

Yet letters show he's unbowed—studying remotely, tracking global news like the 2024 prisoner swaps, refusing to renounce his views.
This is Putin's war on kids.

Yet those rightly condemning Israel's arrestations of Palestinian child prisoners, held without charge are often silent on cases like this. True solidarity means no double standards.

So maybe they just ignore this story and it's why I share it here.
