Phyllotaxis - ‘opposite’ leaves arise from the stem at the same level & the same node, on opposite sides of the stem. ‘alternate’ (spiral) pattern, each leaf arises at a different node on the stem.

these two sycamores are a great example of retrenchment. this is where a tree, past its youthful prime, shrinks into a smaller tree by developing its lower crown and shutting down its upper crown.
