THE RELEASE OF DETAINED STUDENTS AND THE DEMAND FOR ACCOUNTABILITY
Dear Members of this Great Union and the general public,
The leadership of the FUOYE Students’ Union Government is pleased to inform the entire student community that our students who had been detained for several days in connection with allegations that, to our knowledge, had not been substantiated have been released.
The release of the affected students followed the intervention of the Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State Command, CP Falade who directed that the students be released unconditionally.
While we sincerely appreciate the Commissioner of Police for his timely intervention and commitment to ensuring justice, we wish to reiterate that the release of the students represents only one aspect of the concerns raised by the Union. We remain hopeful that our other demands will receive the necessary attention and appropriate resolution.
The Students’ Union Government wishes to sincerely appreciate the general public, students, stakeholders and all well-meaning individuals who expressed concern over the situation and stood in solidarity with our students throughout this period.
We particularly acknowledge and appreciate the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students Ekiti JCC for its solidarity, intervention and support during this period.
We also extend our profound appreciation to Comrade Owolewa Taiwo the Head of Administration, NANS Headquarters, for his solidarity, support and commitment to the welfare and protection of students. The Union does not take this support for granted, and we remain grateful to everyone who stood with us in seeking justice for the affected students.
Of particular concern to the Students’ Union Government is the apparent influence of one Mr. Chukz in the handling of this matter. The Union is therefore calling for a thorough and impartial investigation into the nature of the relationship, if any, between Mr. Chukz, CSP Ayo Gabriel Akinsowon, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), and Okonkwo Rose Onyi, the Area Commander, Ikole.
It is important for the appropriate authorities to establish how and why directives allegedly emanating from a private individual could influence decisions or actions taken by senior police officers within the Ikole Division and Area Command. If it is established that the DPO and the Area Commander acted on instructions from Mr. Chukz, the basis, authority and circumstances surrounding such directives must be clearly established and made subject to appropriate administrative review.
The Students’ Union Government is particularly concerned that the circumstances surrounding the detention of our students and the subsequent handling of the matter raise legitimate questions about accountability, chain of command and adherence to due process. These questions cannot simply be ignored.
We therefore call on the Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State Command, and other relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances thoroughly, including who authorised the detention of the students, the source of the directives under which the students were detained, the role played by Mr. Chukz, and the extent to which the DPO CSP Ayo Gabriel Akinsowon and Area Commander, Okoronkwo Rose Onyi exercised independent professional judgment in the matter.
We remain committed to pursuing justice for the students who were subjected to abuse and inappropriate treatment during the course of their detention. We are particularly concerned about the circumstances surrounding the conduct of some officers at the Ikole Divisional Police and the Area Command, Ikole.
As a Union entrusted with the protection and representation of students’ interests, we call for a thorough, impartial and transparent investigation into all allegations surrounding this incident and urge the appropriate authorities to take necessary administrative and disciplinary action wherever wrongdoing is established.
