Scenes of Father Basil Lee Jellicoe, clergyman of the Church of England, at the Anchor pub, Somers Town (now Chalton St, St Pancras, NW) explaining why people gather in a pub. Whitbread’s brewery had given Jellicoe the control of this rebuilt pub in Stibbington Street. Scenes of Jellicoe playing accordian and singing with male and female patrons. Scenes of drinking and merrymaking.

Priests have always was been involved in politics. Jellicoe was one of the greatest social and housing reformers of his generation. In Camden he founded the St Pancras Housing Association.

My little tweet about Fr Jellicoe has gone ecclesiastical viral….The contrast with the present sort of mission that is now dominant @churchofengland is just so stark here…..:

Here is Jellicoe embedded in his parish @SaveTheParish, knowing his people & loving them as they are & seeing Christ in them, learning about God from them.

We are now, like wanton vandals of this fine tradition that we inherited, are destroying the parish, no longer know much about the material needs of the people amongst whom we live & only begin to love them if they accept the idolatrous sectarian idol of a pseudo-Christ that is just a projection of our own narcissism.

Here is Jellicoe doing a fresh expression of church embedded in material location, addressing the housing & cost of living crises of his own day, alcoholism (he didn’t sell spirits) & the domestic abuse that was a product of it, doing practical safeguarding to protect women & children.

We now, far too often, fail to address these material needs of the poorest in a parish like mine @parishnw6 in which there is still overcrowding, both housing & living crises, still addiction issues & the abuse that emanates from them. We go straight into marketing the pseudo-Christ that is a middle class aberration of Jesus of Nazareth & the kingdom of God that he embodied.

Jellicoe’s is a ministry deeply saturated in the values of justice, peace, and compassion that are at heart of what Christ taught, and what Christ lived out & died because of. He wanted to address every part of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs & knew you could not bring the meaning of the fullness of the gospel to people before you addressed their material & psychological insecurities.

We now want to seek meaning at the top of end to triangle & forget the rest.

Save the parish.
Stop church planting that is not embedded in the parish.
Let’s get materially real.
It is what God becoming flesh in Jesus is all about.
