Many may not realize that Mackenyu comes from a legendary action-movie family. His father was none other than Sonny Chiba. 🕊
The Japanese martial arts icon passed away five years ago today, at the age of 82. Long before Mackenyu became internationally recognized as Roronoa Zoro, his father had already built a career that crossed Japanese martial-arts cinema and Hollywood.
Some of Sonny Chiba’s most recognizable roles were Hattori Hanzo in Kill Bill, Takuma Tsurugi in The Street Fighter, Lord Conqueror in The Storm Riders, and Uncle Kamata in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.
Today, Mackenyu carries the acting legacy into a new generation through Roronoa Zoro in One Piece, Yukishiro Enishi in Rurouni Kenshin: The Final, Seiya in Knights of the Zodiac, and Ryoichi in Pacific Rim: Uprising.
Father and son found international audiences in very different eras, but both became known for bringing action-heavy characters to life.
Remembering the legendary Sonny Chiba five years after his passing. His legacy continues both through his films and through the next generation. ❤
