The TPLF says it is Haile Selassie I who annexed Wolqait when he created the Bege-Meder province after his restoration. Not so. Wolqait is part of the historic Amhara.
@Jawar_Mohammed Even if they did it, then politics, political science, or history will not judge them. How could this be lost on JM?
But what does "right-wing Amhara political camp" mean? Was not JM foremost in calling the Amhara to organize as Amharas to defend and promote their interest?
@alemayehuGeda The country transitioning to electric and solar energy sooner my reduce the frequency of our journey to the IMF. How to achieve this "golden" goal (if not "green" goal primarily) may require us to hold a wide consultation with a broad spectrum of stakeholders. (3)
@alemayehuGeda The driving force behind the policy may not be the intention to save Planet earth from climate change. It could be the urgency to save hard currency in the buying and transporting of hydrocarbons; and we may end up paying less to Djibouti in hard currency. (2)
@Mikitango This ETH economist explains the basics of the risk involved in floating foreign exchange rate. His analysis is based on science and historical experiences. https://t.co/CLbYZtU21x
@alemayehuGeda@YonasBiru57@AlemuZewge@NeaminZeleke We have to know where to start to fix such problems which make our economy feeble and force us going begging for hard currency. We can start at least from the primordial firsts: achieving political stability, fighting corruption, and be wise about state-funded projects. (4)
@alemayehuGeda@YonasBiru57@AlemuZewge@NeaminZeleke The hard currency infusion from the IMF can provide the ETH economy only temporary relief. Therefore, it will not be long before we see our officials knocking on the doors of the IMF again begging for another hard currency "shot". (2)
@alemayehuGeda@YonasBiru57@AlemuZewge@NeaminZeleke The country is in a vicious circle, where population explosion, political instability, indebtedness, misguided policy priorities, corruption, climate change, and worsening terms of trade make the trap. It is such problems which exacerbate our economic woes. (3)
@alemayehuGeda Paul Volcker has stated: "When the Fund consults with a poor and weak country, the country gets in line. When it consults with a big and strong country, the Fund gets in line" (Volcker and Toyoo Gyoten, 1992).
@alemayehuGeda Institutions are not created to be socially efficient; rather they, or at least the formal rules, are created to serve the interests of those with the bargaining power to create new rules. (Douglas C. North, Nobel Lecture, 1993)
@iyoba4u@MatewosTerefe There could be some additional factors at play. (1). The Forex market needs time to adjust to the new economic reality. (2) The said IMF infusion of US $ plays into expectations about ETH's forex liquidity, shoring up the value of its birr.
At this point, Dr. Yonas should unlatch his intellectual harness from the Fano movement and place it somewhere else. There could a few viable possibilities for him to consider. Or, he may even need to go outside the familiar to recognize a potential solution.
Perhaps, by its inception & composition, the Fano movement was not in a position to coalesce or develop a common ideology or create a political wing. However, it does not mean that the Fano has not achieved anything in protecting Amhara's interest or promoting its cause.
A metastasizing web of intrastate & interstate conflicts stretching from Sudan to Somalia could bring unprecedented chaos across the Horn, creating space for extremist militant networks & countries hostile to Western interests and a free and open Red Sea. https://t.co/8uIJHUGYz9
