Prince Asfa Wossen Asserate's address at the European Centre for Law and Justice was a profound testimony to the genocide against the Amhara people and the targeted attacks on Ethiopian Orthodox Christians and civilians.
With historical depth and moral clarity, he reminded the world that genocide, religious persecution, and the destruction of a people's heritage cannot be met with silence. His words were a defense of truth, memory, and human dignity.
The world must not look away.

What really happened in Arsi, Ethiopia during election week? ๐งต
100+ killed or wounded. Two churches burned. Thousands displaced. And when religious figures spoke out, regime forces began arresting them across the country.
Here's what's being covered up ๐

According to local sources, Ethiopian authorities have started arresting prominent Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church clergy and religious teachers in what observers believe is a crackdown on voices that publicly condemned the recent massacre of Orthodox Christians in Asko Woreda of East Arsi Zone, Oromia Region.
The arrests follow reports that more than 53 Orthodox Christians were killed, over 280 remain missing, hundreds of homes were destroyed, and the historic 101-year-old Telata Chefa St. Gabriel Church was burned during a large-scale attack allegedly carried out by Oromo Liberation Army (OLA/Shene) militants against Orthodox Christian communities in East Arsi Zone between May 31st to June 2nd.
Among those arrested is Deacon Zelalem Taye, a well-known young gospel preacher recognized for his teaching, counseling work, and extensive service to Orthodox Sunday schools. He was reportedly detained in Addis Ababa and is believed to have been targeted after writing about the killings of Christians in Arsi.
Priest Getnet Aytenew, a prominent Orthodox priest known for his educational content on social media and his commentary on church affairs, was also reportedly arrested. Sources indicate his detention is linked to his writings regarding the massacre of Orthodox Christians in Arsi.
Authorities also detained Priest Dr. Mezgebu Kassa, a respected theologian, researcher, author, and former Chief Executive Officer of EOTC TV. Dr. Mezgebu is known for numerous theological publications, including the book Betrรฉ Haymanot and the internationally published Theanthropic Ethics in Conversation with Autonomy and Heteronomy. He is being held at the Federal Police detention center in Mexico Square, Addis Ababa.
In addition, Yeneta Betre Mariam Abebaw, a prominent Orthodox scholar and educator known for making traditional church teachings widely accessible through digital platforms, was arrested in Gonder City. He is the author of several widely circulated works on Orthodox theology, apologetics, and Geโez language studies.
The arrests have generated concern among church followers and observers, who note that all four individuals are known primarily for religious teaching, theological scholarship, and public advocacy. Reports from multiple sources suggest that the detentions may be connected to their public statements and writings regarding the killings, destruction of churches, and humanitarian crisis affecting Orthodox Christian communities in East Arsi Zone.
The wave of arrests comes amid growing criticism of the governmentโs response to the violence, with local sources alleging that survivors remain trapped in affected areas while humanitarian assistance faces significant obstacles in reaching displaced and wounded civilians.
We strongly condemn the government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the Prosperity Party regime for its direct and systematic participation in the persecution and killing of Ethiopian Orthodox Christians.
In the Oromia region, state forces and state-backed actors are carrying out targeted attacks on Orthodox churches and their faithful. Historic churches have been burned to the ground, worshippers massacred while praying, and entire communities terrorized with impunity. This is not a failure to protect citizens - it is active state involvement in atrocities against a religious community that forms a cornerstone of Ethiopian identity.
The Abiy regime bears full responsibility for these crimes. By orchestrating, enabling, or directly executing violence against Orthodox Christians in Oromia and beyond, it has turned the machinery of the state into an instrument of religious and ethnic persecution.
We call on the international community - the United Nations, African Union, United States, European Union, and all governments that claim to stand for human rights - to immediately condemn these atrocities, launch independent investigations, impose targeted sanctions on responsible officials, and demand accountability at the highest levels.
Silence in the face of state-sponsored killings of Orthodox Christians is complicity. The world must act now before more blood is shed.
Justice for the victims. An end to the Abiy regimeโs war on the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.

What is happening in Arsi against Orthodox Tewahido Christians constitutes the definition of genocide: " The deliberate, systematic effort to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group."
The world has failed innocent victims. Thousands of #OrthodoxChristians have been killed in Arsi, Oromia ๐ช๐น while impunity has emboldened the perpetrators. The latest massacred carried out in broad daylight on June 1, 2026 is another painful reminder #Howmuchlonger@AP@Pontifex
๐จ Church priests and residents have been detained in Qinbaba Kebele near Bahir Dar for allegedly โfailing to conduct the Prayer of the Covenantโ on election day
@MeseretMedia
June 4, 2026
Sources from Qinbaba Kebele, located near Bahir Dar City, report that local government militia members have been carrying out intimidation, arrests, and threats against religious leaders and residents in the area.
According to sources who spoke to our news outlet, priests from Qinbaba Eyesus Church conducted the customary overnight Kidan (Prayer of the Covenant) on the eve of election day. However, due to a malfunction of the churchโs loudspeaker system, the service could not be heard by the surrounding community.
Despite this, militia members who arrived the following morning to oversee the election allegedly accused the priests, saying, โWe did not hear the church service. You intentionally did this to prevent the election from taking place and to support Fano.โ According to sources, the priests were subsequently arrested and remain in detention.
In addition, residents were reportedly being compelled to leave their homes and participate in the election. However, after gunfire suddenly erupted around the town, the election process was reportedly disrupted and could not proceed as planned.
Following the incident, militia members reportedly gathered residents and told them, โWhen gunfire broke out, instead of coming out and serving as cover for us, you stayed inside your homes. You also did not vote. Therefore, you are supporters of Fano.โ Sources said the residents were subjected to serious threats and intimidation.
Witnesses further stated that, even before the official election results has been announced, militia members were telling residents, โThe government has been re-elected. From now on, we will rule over you forcefully. We will see what you can do.โ
Residents note that the area has experienced repeated hardships since the outbreak of armed conflict three years ago. Although federal defense forces are currently stationed in the area, some individuals who were formerly associated with Fano and have since become government militia members are reportedly arresting and punishing residents arbitrarily, accusing them of providing information to or supporting Fano.
As a result of these conditions, many local residents are reportedly abandoning their homes and property and fleeing to Bahir Dar City.
