Colonialism wasnโt only about taking land, it also sought to regulate love, intimacy, and the human body.
In Zimbabwe (then known as Southern Rhodesia), the Immorality and Indecency Suppression Ordinance No. 19 of 1903 criminalised consensual relationships between white women and African men, while largely overlooking those between white men and African women.
The question is: What did the colonial state fear?
It feared that if a white woman could freely choose an African man as her equal, the very ideology of white supremacy began to unravel. Such relationships challenged the myths of racial superiority, blurred the line between ruler and ruled, and threatened a system built on racial hierarchy.
Sometimes the clearest window into a societyโs fears isnโt found in speeches; itโs found in its laws.
