We’re on Bournemouth beach laying out a memorial to the more than 11,500 Palestinian children and 36 Israeli children who’ve been killed since October 7th. It will be over 5km long and we hope to keep it here for 24 hours.
The UK, US and other governments should be doing all they can to protect children, not actively arming the Israeli military that’s responsible for the deaths of over 99.6% of the children represented here.

I fully expected - & often predicted - the slow restoration of pre-Brexit positions on diminished terms & with reduced clout. But I confess I did not expect them to pretend they represented some sort of victory or achievement. I’ll never learn…
The Truss Awards FFS. Can we just do away with resignation honours altogether?Just because you give money shouldn’t get you a gong. Keep them for people who serve their communities and make distinguished contribution to public life. NOT hacks and political grifters
Here is a 14th explanation for the teen mental health crisis which does not work: parents are increasingly abusive since 2010 (they are not).
Nobody has yet proposed an explanation for the crisis that works--especially internationally-- other than the rapid teen transition from flip phones to smart phones around 2012. This also explains why academic achievement stopped rising around 2012 and started declining, as shown in both NAEP and PISA scores. Students with smartphones pay less attention to teachers, and to fellow students.
@jean_twenge laid out 13 failed explanations here:

Note that teen "satisfaction with life" used to track satisfaction with relationship with parents. Until they moved onto smart phones. Can't we at least get phones out of the school day?
How do you like them particulates?! A lung-constricting art installation @COP28_UAE showing the relative air quality in London, New Delhi, and Beijing. Fascinating, if scary. #AirPollution#FossilFuels#ClimateAction#COP28
266 years ago today one of the strangest artists in history was born: William Blake.
He was a poet, a prophet, a painter, a Romantic, an environmentalist, an abolitionist, and a mystic.
The word "unique" is overused, but William Blake truly was unlike any other...
Rev. Tim Daplyn: "It's been termed a pro-Palestinian demonstration, but I think it's a pro-peace demonstration... old soldiers, on Armistice Day, calling for Armistice.."
When schools go phone-free, it is transformative. No school regrets it. Meg Oliver reports on one school, and the broader case for phone free schools: kids pay attention to each other, and their teachers. Kids come to love it:

Prof John Edmunds, "As I explained to Prime Minister Boris Johnson, we either lockdown now and control the epidemic, or it will force you into a lockdown later, when you'll have to lockdown harder and longer. 20,000-25,000 people died. Some would have, but there's no reason for that many people to have died at all.. There was no strategy, no long term thinking."

The gravestone of Soviet-German composer Alfred Schnittke (1934 - 1998). It's a musical staff with a semibreve (the center bar) indicating a rest or pause in the music. The fermata (the half circle + dot at the top) indicates to hold the note (in this case the rest) as long as desired. The note should then be performed fortississimo (the three f's at the bottom), meaning it should be performed extremely loudly/strongly. So it's essentially an extremely loud/strong silence (rest) to be held as long as desired.
Once again, the BBC holds itself to higher standards than any other media organisation. And once again they will get pummelled by people who want the ‘news’ to reflect their preconceived notions.
Months ago I posted that a prison officer had told me that due to overcrowding, they were 'downgrading' serious/dangerous criminals who should be in single cells so they could share with lower level , often vulnerable criminals.
Eg: 15% of prisoners report being homeless before entering prison. 85% have an active substance use disorder or were incarcerated for a crime involving drugs or drug use
Majority of women, 80+%, are in prison on short sentences of less than 12 mths for non-violent offences; significant % are mothers. Annual cost per prison place for a woman is c. £56,000. Intensive community orders cost less than a third of that and evidence shows they're more effective at reducing reoffending, and stopping kids going into care - yet another cost - societally and financially!
UK #Prisons cost too much, locks up the wrong people and don't prevent reoffending - need a radical rethink!

I have been struggling to articulate the complex emotions I've been feeling since Saturday morning as a Jew, a liberal/progressive, a believer that Palestinians and Jews have a right to a homeland, to safety and dignity. A thread 1/
A thing of beauty…
This is Jonathan Miller taking on Enoch Powell
This is how you expose people like Suella Braverman for the race-baiting, dog-whistling charlatans that they are.
BREAKING: Labour will appoint a Covid Corruption Commissioner to recover billions lost to waste and fraud.
As Chancellor, I will always treat taxpayers' money with respect.
