It was forty years ago, summer of ‘83, when I relocated to Arlington, Tx., from Pine Bluff, Arkansas, to plant a church there, and to enroll in SWBTS. I was introduced that summer to an SBC pastor, Charles Clary, Tate Springs Church, Arlington, who welcomed me, sponsored our church plant, & lead me through the process of being aligned with the SBC. Took a long time, but my wife and I both earned our Master of Theological Studies degrees from SWBTS in December’21. It’s been overall wonderful 40yr relationship with the SBC, even through seasons of “many dangers, toils and snares.”

Today may be the end of my season with the SBC. What I could be patient with, and tolerate as a 27yr old church planter, I simply no longer have that sams patience & toleration as a almost(June 15), 67 yr old man.

The beauty and upsides of the SBC is why I’ve remained thus far. They are strong, mighty, and many. The underbelly, ugly side, & uneasiness of the SBC I now find overwhelming, & they seem to be moving backwards & not forward on these issues. What are those issues? Two primary ones.

(1)Racism—not one minority hired as an entity head in 40yrs is blatant & intolerable racism.

(2)Sexism—The SBC that I joined in ‘83 did not place, or enact unbiblical, biased, blatantly discriminatory policies directed toward restricted women into to the life, culture, and mindsets of local churches. Churches were allowed to practice autonomy on women in ministry matters. Furthermore, there’s absolutely nothing expressed in the video of Saddleback’s pastor, Andy Wood explaining their views & practices on women in ministry that violates the BFM2K. Furthermore, the preamble to the statement doesn’t require walking lock step with every jot & title of the BFM2K. If consistency was being practiced, all churches who practice open communion would be disfellowshipped. What we’re going to witness today is not consistency, but hypocrisy.

It’s sexism that’s driving singling out a highly disputed interpretation & application of BFM2K to disfellowship Saddleback. I could cite sexism in other aspects of SBC culture too, if time permitted.

There’s a high tolerance for racism and sexism in SBC life, that I can no longer live with. On both issues I see the SBC beginning to backslide after making major progress, and now moving in the wrong direction.

I’m at peace with the 40yr season of engagement & involvement with the SBC. However, pending votes today would be indicative to me that my season may have ended.

Really grateful for the wonderful blessings received, & hopefully those we shared with & gave back to the SBC. The Cornerstone Church, Arlington, has given back to the SBC financially & otherwise, far more than the SBC has given us, and that’s the way it should be.

God is not pleased with racism or sexism, neither am I. I’d rather be on the side of God!

It’s my sincere prayer that Saddleback is reinstated to the SBC.

If the Sovereign God choose not to allow such, I would hope that Rick Warren would prayerfully consider launching a biblical, Kingdom centered, Baptist doctrinally distinctive, ministry organism/organization, that respects autonomy. & plant healthy churches, as he has proven capable of doing multiple hundreds, if not a thousand times over. He could even partner with GC2/Texas Baptist to accomplish this end.

I’d made peace with never attending another SBC annual mtg, before Saddleback appealed the decision to disfellowship them. I’m yet persuaded there’s a strong possibility the vote will go in Saddleback’s favor.

If by chance it doesn’t, it will be a reminder of the words of Jesus: “you can’t pour new wine into old wine skins.” Jesus also taught, “where peace doesn’t abide shake the dust from your feet.” I believe both verses apply to this situation.

However, I also believe there are hundreds, if not thousands of SBC churches, and non SBC Baptist churches who would love to partner with a convention, missions organization, or ministry movement, that held Baptist theological convictions, but believe that the Bible and the Holy Spirit empowers, equips, calls, convicts, deploy, and assigns, roles for women to serve in local church contexts, far beyond what many in the SBC may be able to accept, because of their traditions, which were also racists traditions, they yet obviously struggle with, which explains why a highly qualified minister as Willie McLaurin, thus far can’t get elected as EC President. It is not coincidental—that the SBC has never appointed an Asian, Hispanic, Native American, or African American as an entity head, & at least 70yrs of allowing minority membership—it is intentional. The racism & sexism that’s now on full display has to be met with bold opposition, or shaking the dust from feet.

As disappointed as i am with the current state of affairs in the SBC, I must admit….I’m certainly not a Calvinist, but I believe The Sovereign God has brought us to this point, and I’m willing to accept the outcome, whatever that may be, and move forward with, or without the SBC. I must follow the leading of God, wherever that takes me.

Living with visible racism & sexism has come to an end for me. May God lead & guide each of us to vote our biblical convictions & values in NO, & as the hymnologist said, “wherever he leads me, I’ll go.”

I pray the outcome of SBC NO is the reinstatement of Saddleback which is also a vote for autonomy & the empowerment of women within biblical parameters. But, if not, I pray the Holy Spirit birth & empower a movement that will not be bound by racists & sexist traditions, and free women up to be all God has called them to be.

@SophiaLeeHyun @CTmagazine Yes…my husband (steve m cloud) his father (steve L cloud) and his maternal grandfather (bynum) and our two daughter are in ministry with theirs husbands. Great Granddaddy Bynum prayed everyday for 6 generations. We are blessed as a family.

As children we begin with an all good/ all bad dichotomy. Later we discover that our hearts are a complex web of goodness and brokenness. The Psalmist prays “test my heart” for a reason. Spiritual formation is Jesus lovingly and patiently removing the bad and putting in the good.
