This happened to Bernt Herlitz in 2017.

When he appealed the unfair dismissal he ultimately lost and was fined about $50,000.

He and his family faced financial hardship and almost lost their home, until some generous benefactors raised money for him. Bernt remains unemployed today, despite staff shortages for dentists in his area in Gotland.

At the time, Sweden scoffed at the tests and claimed they were “discriminatory” but since then they have quietly brought in mass dental testing, for those whose age is in doubt, by the National Board of Forensic Medicine.

Bernt deserves a medal. Not vilification and unemployment.

At 13 Judy Garland signed with MGM, and the studio decided she was too fat, put her on chicken soup, black coffee and cigarettes, and handed her pills to keep her going and more pills to knock her out, and by the time she finished The Wizard of Oz she was hooked on both.

She had been on stage since she was two, as Frances Gumm, the youngest of the Gumm Sisters. Her mother, Ethel, managed her, and according to her biographer first gave her pills, for energy and for sleep, before she was ten. Judy later called her mother the real Wicked Witch of the West.

MGM signed her in 1935. Louis B. Mayer and the studio bosses reportedly called her a fat little pig with pigtails. Mayer insisted on the diet himself: chicken soup, black coffee and cigarettes, with pills to take her appetite away. The studio supplied the pep pills, and when they left her too wired to sleep after the long days on set, it supplied sleeping pills for that. She and Mickey Rooney, she said later, were worked "days and nights on end", once for 72 hours straight, and kept going on pills.

She was 16 when filming began on The Wizard of Oz, and by the time it ended she was addicted to amphetamines and barbiturates. The girl in the gingham dress singing about somewhere over the rainbow was being starved by the studio and dosed by it.

The rest of her life was pills, husbands, comebacks and collapses. "At times," she said, "I have been pretty much of a walking advertisement for sleeping pills." She died in London on 22 June 1969, aged 47, of an accidental overdose of barbiturates.

At MGM a growing girl's hunger was treated as the problem, and the studio had a chemical for it.

Hollywood has never stopped thinking that way. It has only changed the delivery, from a bottle of pills to a weekly injection.

WHAT THE FUCK ARE WE SUPPOSED TO DO ANYMORE?

Seriously, what are we supposed to do?

We’ve got a government that so many people feel couldn’t give a flying fuck about them. We’ve got a worldwide crisis unfolding, people are angry, people are struggling, and the world feels like it’s tearing itself apart. Countries are at war, tensions are rising everywhere, and the cost of living has gone through the fucking roof since Covid.

There are wars breaking out everywhere.

Rapes. Murders. Violence. Illegal immigration. Communities feeling abandoned. Families struggling to put food on the table whilst working themselves into the ground just to survive.

THE UK IS AT BREAKING POINT.

And what makes it even more fucking frustrating is that ordinary people feel like they can’t even speak their minds anymore. You post your opinions online, you worry about being arrested. You speak out at work, you risk losing your job. You try to stand up for what you believe in, and suddenly you’re the one being treated like the problem.

WHAT THE FUCK ARE PEOPLE SUPPOSED TO DO?

People are exhausted. People are frightened. People are watching their futures disappear in front of their eyes, wondering how the hell they’re supposed to build a decent life for themselves and their children in a world that feels increasingly out of control.

And the most heartbreaking part? Some people are reaching such desperate levels of despair that they’re taking their own lives because they simply feel they can’t cope anymore.

How much more can people take before somebody actually listens?

This country used to be something we could be proud of. A place where people could work hard, raise their families, feel safe in their communities and believe that tomorrow might be better than today.

Where has that hope gone?

I desperately want to believe that Britain can turn itself around. I want to believe that one day we can rebuild this country, restore some pride, bring communities back together and give our children a future worth fighting for.

But I’m not going to lie. Looking at the state of the world right now, it’s fucking difficult to see a way out.

And that’s what hurts the most.

Because this isn’t just about politics. It’s about people. It’s about families. It’s about our children. It’s about millions of ordinary people who are sick to death of struggling, sick to death of worrying, and sick to death of feeling like nobody gives a shit about them.

People deserve better than this.

And something has to change, because people are running out of hope.
