If God doesn’t exist, then sin doesn’t exist, but then morality dies as well. Without God behavior simply becomes a matter of personal preference and people are permitted to do anything and no one should stop them. Atheism is a morally defeatist position.

1. If morality is grounded only in avoiding the suffering of conscious creatures, then any act that causes no suffering is morally okay.

2. Looking at artificially made child pornography causes no suffering to any conscious creature.

3. Therefore, looking at artificially made child pornography is morally okay.

4. But looking at artificially made child pornography is not morally okay.

C. Therefore, morality is not ultimately grounded in the avoidance of suffering.

The point of this argument is to demonstrate that trying to ground morality out in suffering is absurd, there are many things we all know are wrong that don’t cause suffering. And there are also many things that are right that do cause suffering. Suffering isn’t the answer.
