Illinois’ family court system and DCFS operate under state government led by Governor JB Pritzker, while Attorney General Kwame Raoul serves as the state’s chief legal officer.

Many parents have alleged that they reported sexual abuse involving their children, presented evidence, and still believe the system failed to protect those children. Some also allege that judges, guardians ad litem (GALs), and court-appointed professionals continued placing or keeping children in homes they considered abusive. These are serious allegations that have not been established by a court.

Cook County Commissioner and congressional candidate Donna Miller, along with 23rd Ward Alderman Silvana Tabares, co-sponsored the Cook County Violence Against Women Task Force, which was created in response to an increase in fatal domestic violence shootings and homicides. The task force has called for greater transparency, more public data, and making Cook County courts subject to open records laws.

In our opinion, transparency must begin by addressing the concerns of the parents who have already come forward. Many say they spoke before the Cook County Board, shared their experiences, and were ignored.

The Phase One report was prepared by Chicago77 Charities with assistance from the University of Chicago Crime Lab, Northwestern University, and other organizations. Those institutions should also be willing to examine allegations involving the family court system with the same commitment to accountability they advocate elsewhere.

Over the coming week, we will be meeting with parents who say they have been ignored by elected officials and the family court system. Their stories deserve to be heard.

In our opinion, before voters in Illinois’ 2nd Congressional District send anyone to Congress, they should carefully examine that candidate’s record and decide whether additional investigation and accountability are needed.
