@TaraBull If the taxpayers understood that the Regents use their status to apply property tax exempt status onto their preferred private equity partners and the taxpayers are subsidizing the PE tens of millions annually, you'd think they'd be mad.
Audit PILOT (payment in-lieu of taxes)
Eminent Domain Horror in Arizona
ASU is using eminent domain to seize an 89 year old man’s 124 year old home that he’s owned for 50 years. He turned down their $850k offer. Now they’re forcing him out. Just an old man living in peace and the government can still take it.
This is terrifying.
@UNM Unbelievable how long it has taken.
Let' hope its not just a tax scam as would be the concern going through the Supreme Court, S-1-SC-41215, where UNM is being used as a shield to protect private equity- Blackstone- from paying taxes so all us residents subsidize their returns.
@RioGrandeFndn The entire Regent structure needs to be scrutinized. Massively influential in health care, real estate, employment, economic investments yet us citizens have no insight to their goals or orders to which they march.
@ABQBizFirst Of course our $285M public subsidy - obtained w/o disclosing massive lawsuit S-1-SC-41215 - goes to out of state burger joint and a declining business.
When our institutions lead, our $$$ goes poof. Extraction model.

@vorrieitalia@stormingNM@TorrezforNM Untrue! Private Equity are landowners too and their rights are exploding in NM! Uncheck energy, water, use- its good to be PE in NM. In fact, if Blackstone has their way, PE will be able to leverage public entities and become tax exempt too!
But you're probably talking about us
@GeoffGrammer I wish I could support athletics financally for what we remember it to be, but current reality is that college athletics is a pure extraction model for private equity; leveraging all goodwill. Blackstone is suing the taxpayers to be exempt and using UNM as shield. Same model.
@KananiFong@krqegarate@UNM@krqe Healthcare, sports and real estate are the three main focuses now at UNM because those are areas private equity can leverage the publicly 'accepted' functions of U. PE highly leverage returns by manipulating public cause efforts. Unchecked costs and tax manipulation = profit!
@3Strands4now Y'all need to go after @azregents, claim tax exemptible ownership of properties to shield @BX from paying taxes on for-profit commercial real estate. Prior @ArizonaAG tried to intervene, but didn't stand ground.
See NM S-1-SC-41215, same thing. But way larger in AZ. >$100M/yr.
@DukeNougat73941@toddhathorne@RichardRey41312 The Regents are suing their own community in order to keep Blackstone apartment complexes off the tax roll; costing their own UNMH ~$10m. S-1-SC-41215
Not clear if Regents even knew happening administration went rogue. Won't release legal engagement letters that are public info
@toddhathorne@RichardRey41312 "go to the Regents". Who do you think appoints the Regents?
Regents are unelected with far too much power overseeing healthcare, professional sports, real estate and education; in that order.
Most actions go to benefit big private outside equity (hello Blackstone), not us.
@toddhathorne@americancampus@BerncoAssessor@UNM Not UNM. Their position is a exemption suckhole that outside private interests aim to exploit so NM taxpayers subsidize their profits. 100% of forfeited tax collections goes to the profit of BX. The South Campus TIDD is $285M aimed to further this exploitation.
@dowfornm@americancampus@BerncoAssessor@UNM Also, there is no evidence of a @UNM / @rodeylaw agreement. Rodey does represent @americancampus. ACC pays Rodey and UNM reimburses ACC for Rodey legal advice. In Court, somehow, despite obvious conflict and lack of engagement Rodey claims to also represent UNM.
@dowfornm Lawsuit S-1-SC-41215: @americancampus (a Blackstone entity) is suing @BerncoAssessor so they don't have to pay taxes like the rest of us, and @unm is footing 10% of the legal costs in support of ACC (and against its own best interests as UNMH will forfeit millions in taxes).
