R. v. A.B., 2024 ONCA 111 - Crown breached the appellant’s confidential informant privilege when it disclosed this subject matter to a co-accused. Trial judge dismissed stay application. @ONCA_en correctly decides stay of proceedings must be entered.

.@DanielBrownLaw on the Zameer trial and a need to ensure "precious court time is not wasted on hopeless prosecutions at the expense of cases already in danger of being tossed due to lengthy court delays." via @TorontoStar https://t.co/9UCEz2of8O
A hero to me is a man who was terrorized by police, beaten by police, charged with murder by police, held for bail, attacked by the Mayor and the Premier for being released, besieged by an unsympathetic press and prosecuted on no theory who still thanks Canada for his freedom.
Thank you to the jury and Justice Anne Molloy @SCJOntario_en for being on the right side of the law and vindicating Mr. Zameer and to @Nader_Hasan_law for the stoic, zealous and compassionate defence of his client.
The Zameer trial is an example of how fragile our jeopardy is and how quickly it can be brought into question. However, it reaffirms the underpinnings of our justice system, the presumption of innocence and the fact that police don’t always tell the truth.
Here’s my wrap on what happened today as the not guilty verdict came down at the Umar Zameer trial (minus the last few seconds because the story got cut off by X). Wish it could have been longer but I was given 2 min 30 seconds max by the producer
This is beyond comprehension. It’s completely unacceptable that the person charged for this heinous crime is now out on bail. Our justice system needs to get its act together and start putting victims and their families ahead of criminals.
The crown says Umar Zameer murdered Constable Jeffrey Northrup. The defence says it was a tragic accident not a crime. Here’s my 6 pm story from day one at the First Degree Murder trial for Umar Zameer, described by his lawyer as an accountant & family man. @globalnewsto
@MarcSciars This recently happened to me in more rural area during a judicial pre trial (in Woodstock). The undertone intends to imply that “toronto lawyers” carry with them a certain stereotype… I always respond in a light hearted manner which usually neutralizes the stigma.
A broken bail system from what perspective? We should all be concerned that 82% of provincial inmates in Ontario are in custody awaiting trial. That’s 82% of people who are presumptively innocent. 82% of people who have been denied their liberty. https://t.co/wM5a1wKQBZ
I am looking for an articling student for the 2024-2025 articling term. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone who aspires to be a criminal trial lawyer. To apply please submit the following to [email protected]: Cover letter, CV, transcripts and references
@MarcSciars They shouldn’t ask, period. I’m sure the question wouldn’t be received well if defence counsel asked a young crown to join the “dark side”. I was brought up around the generation of lawyers before me so I’m a little old school that way. #dieharddefence
Incredibly honoured to become the 20th President in the rich history of the @ClaOntario. Thank you @johnstruthers and @DanielBrownLaw. Congratulations to an incredible group of lawyers that have been elected to our executive and Board, and my deepest respect to all who ran.
