We do not agree with Adolescence being shown in schools and intend to put our arguments across urgently to government.

Whilst it is a fantastic, gritty piece of writing, Adolescence is not an educational resource and is not suitable for schools. Teachers cannot be expected to roll this out, and this cannot be a knee jerk response.

🤔| A personal reflection on the government’s recent report: ‘Effectiveness of School Mental Health Awareness Interventions’

I’ve spent a lot of time reflecting on the government’s recent report, Effectiveness of School Mental Health Awareness Interventions (linked below). It highlights the progress made in raising awareness of mental health in schools but also exposes a critical gap: awareness without action isn’t enough.

In my role, I see first-hand how schools are becoming the frontline of mental health support for young people. Staff are identifying concerns earlier than ever, but without the right resources, early intervention becomes nearly impossible. The report reinforces what many of us in education have been saying for years: we need more than just awareness campaigns—we need proper investment in mental health provision.

Some key findings that stood out:

- Awareness ≠ Support – Schools are making great strides in normalising mental health discussions, but this means more students are coming forward needing help. Without access to timely, specialist intervention, awareness alone cannot solve the crisis.

- Staff Training Gaps – Teachers and school staff are committed to supporting students, but many feel underprepared to handle complex mental health issues. One-off training isn’t enough—we need ongoing professional development and access to mental health specialists.

- Early Intervention is Critical – The earlier we intervene, the better the outcomes for children. But many schools are struggling to fund the preventative programs and targeted support that could make a real difference.

The reality is that schools cannot—and should not—carry this burden alone. The expectation that schools should provide mental health support without the necessary funding and infrastructure is unsustainable.

We need to see:

✅ Increased funding for in-school mental health professionals, including counselors and therapists.

✅ Greater investment in high-quality, sustained training for school staff.

✅ Long-term funding for early intervention and targeted support programs.

We wouldn’t expect schools to diagnose and treat physical health conditions without NHS support, so why is mental health any different? Until the government commits to real, systemic investment, schools will continue to be stretched beyond their capacity, and young people will continue to miss out on the help they need.
