For decades, Somalis across the world have stood by their homeland with unwavering commitment. Through their resilience, investment, knowledge, and sacrifice, our diaspora has been instrumental in rebuilding our nation.

They are not distant from Somalia, they are an inseparable part of its story, its strength, and its future.

This new Department stands as a solemn commitment: that every Somali, wherever they may live, will know that their nation stands with them.

The noble saying goes: "If a Somali is mistreated anywhere in the world simply because they are Somali, then all of us are affected. It is an attack on our future, our dignity, and our identity, and we cannot accept that."

These are not merely words. They are a responsibility.

This Department will work tirelessly to protect the rights and dignity of Somalis abroad, strengthen our partnership with diaspora communities, deepen cooperation with our international partners, and respond decisively to the challenges our people face; from discrimination and exploitation to the scourge of human trafficking.

The Somali flag must never be a symbol of vulnerability. It must be a symbol of dignity, belonging, and hope.

To every Somali at home and across the globe: you are part of one nation, bound by one identity and one shared future.

Wherever you are, Somalia is with you. Together, we will build a nation whose people are respected, protected, and recognised wherever they stand.

Our diaspora is not simply part of our past; it is indispensable to our future.

On this 66th Anniversary of our Independence, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to my beloved fellow citizens of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

Today, we honour the courage, vision, and unwavering determination of the men and women whose sacrifices secured our freedom and laid the foundation of our Republic.

On this very night, sixty-six years ago, Awale was raised for the first time, announcing to the world that Somalia had taken its rightful place among the family of free nations.

Tonight, Awale once again flies proudly across our homeland and above our embassies around the world, a timeless symbol of our unity, our sovereignty, and our enduring national spirit.

It was a profound honour to commemorate this historic occasion alongside my fellow citizens in Galmudug.

The generation that secured our independence entrusted us with more than freedom; they entrusted us with a mission; to build a strong, peaceful, and prosperous Somalia worthy of their sacrifice.

From strengthening security to expanding education, from improving healthcare to advancing economic self-sufficiency, we shall continue with determination and purpose to steer our nation towards the future our forefathers envisioned.

This Independence Day is not only a celebration of our history, it is a renewal of our covenant with one another and with generations yet to come.

Let us move forward with confidence, united in purpose, steadfast in patriotism, and unwavering in our belief that Somalia's greatest days lie ahead.

May Awale forever fly high over a united, peaceful, and prosperous Somalia.

Somali 🇸🇴 referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, crowned CAF’s Best Referee of 2025 and the first Somali official ever chosen for a men’s FIFA World Cup, has been denied entry into the United States.

Even though he secured a U.S. visa with assistance from the Somali embassy in Nairobi and was traveling on a diplomatic passport, he was refused entry upon arrival and sent back to Turkey.

This setback may impact his participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, since referees and officials are required to move between the United States, Canada, and Mexico throughout the tournament.
