The interview of @Ed_Miliband conducted by @JustinOnWeb on @BBCr4today this morning, even for Webb, struck a new low. Using the disgraceful remarks of @chiefrabbi as a lever, he effectively suggested Miliband wasnt Jewish because he didn't attend synagogue. The entire treatment of the issue by the programme was appalling. Soft soap interview of the Israeli spokesperson who was not challenged on the ICJ judgement on the illegality of the occupation, nor on the active support of the Israeli Government for settler violence. Central frame of Miliband interview was antisemitism, safety of British Jews alongside the expected Pro Israel talking points( you can't enforce a ban- why not wait until after the elections?). Astonishingly at the end he challenged Miliband on why he didn't use the word genocide. When Miliband gave his inadequate answer, that this had to be determined by the ICJ, of course Webb didn't say what he could have.." given the ICJ has accepted the plausibility of South Africa's case, will the UK be taking further action, as it is obliged to do , to prevent genocide". Instead he threw at him Simon Schama's grotesque line that anyone who accuses Israel of genocide is guilty of a blood libel, a premiss that would make Israel uniquely protected from ever being investigated for the crime whatever the evidence. 2 days of coverage of the issue as the main story on Today ... not a single interview with a Palestinian... not a single interview with anyone who supports the action but feels it does not go anywhere near far enough .

I hugely appreciate the solidarity so will say this with care. I have fought anti-Semitism on here, and in the Labour Party, for years. But it cannot be right that the UK government must refrain from sanctions against settlements because it will make anti-Semites happy (which it will). Just because all the wrong people support something doesn’t actually make it wrong or impermissible. The real problem in this case is the current government of Israel.

I’m sorry, just to be clear, but we are talking about settlements that are *illegal under international law* and we aren’t doing this alone - the UK has been joined by France, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Spain Ireland, Iceland, Norway, Portugal, Poland, and Sweden.
