NY Lawmakers Push to Bring Back Sex Bathhouses Banned During AIDS Crisis

New York lawmakers want to repeal a 1980s public-health law that banned sexual activity in bathhouses and saunas — a ban put in place during the height of the AIDS epidemic that claimed more than 100,000 New Yorkers.

Assemblymember Tony Simone (left) and State Senator Erik Bottcher (right) are leading the charge.

Simone: “Actions taken at the height of the AIDS crisis are out of step with modern reality. The science has changed. It’s time for our laws to change too.”

Bottcher: “The year is 2026, not 1986. Queer New Yorkers are being forced into the shadows… we all know these places exist.”

Critics say reopening facilities designed for anonymous sexual activity is the wrong public-health move.

And Bottcher is wrong — nobody is being forced into the shadows. New Yorkers just want a city dedicated to decency.
