Art is truly all around us. I found this picture on Pinterest, so I do not know who the owner is. But looking at it, I just couldn’t ignore the stark yet subtle ironies in it. A Black man sits dandily on his wooden throne. The irony of present fatherhood, yet he harms himself by consuming beer and cigarettes. He also endangers his princess by exposing her premature lungs to smoke. The beret on his head signals political consciousness. The ambience of the sky, the Black Label, and the utility jacket suggest it was taken on a warm winter Saturday. And I say Saturday because the shoes suggest he is a working man. Poverty sits quietly behind them in the corrugated iron/zinc. Yet in that moment, fatherhood and love make him the richest man in the yard. This picture is worth a thousand words. It tells a story of poverty, love, and fatherhood❤️🇿🇦
