Narcissism is rooted in an ancient Greek myth about a man who became obsessed with himself.

In Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Narcissus is known for his beauty and rejects everyone who falls for him. Echo, a nymph cursed to repeat only the words of others, falls in love with him too. He rejects her, and she slowly fades away until only her voice remains.

Then Narcissus comes across a pool and sees a beautiful face in the water. He falls for it without realizing it’s his own reflection. He reaches for it but can never touch it. Eventually, he realizes who he’s been staring at. The person he wants is himself, so there is no way to have what he wants.

Narcissus dies beside the pool, and a narcissus flower grows where he dies. Echo and Narcissus are almost opposites. She can only repeat other people, while he becomes completely absorbed in himself. Centuries later, his name gave us the word “narcissism.”
