Never trust a Shiba Inu. That smile isn't an apology, it's an appeasement signal.

This is from a video going around in China. A Shiba got his first off-leash run in an empty field. Five minutes later he sprinted for freedom and never looked back. Owner searched a mountain on foot, then drove for an hour. Found the dog at a noodle shop, covered in mud, playing with two girls. When he saw his owner, tail dropped, and he flashed the darkest, most evil Shiba grin you've ever seen, waddling over all sweet. Owner forgave him. Of course he did.

Shibas trick you into forgiving.

Cats are a whole different league. They don't need a grin, they have science.

1) A cat's food-begging purr embeds a cry-like frequency that makes humans want to feed it. McComb 2009, Current Biology. People rate it more urgent and more pleasant. Your cat is literally playing baby sounds to you.

2) Cats know their names. They just choose not to respond. Saito 2019, Scientific Reports. That "didn't hear you" thing? Acting.

3) Some cats fake limps for treats. Vets have been fooled.

4) Belly showing isn't an invitation. It's a trust test. Touch it wrong and you'll find out.
