@bensmithrugby Ben, claiming the All Blacks will “blow away” the Boks is peak delusion—even with Siya nursing a niggle. The Springboks are two-time world champs with depth for days. Your optimism is cute, but reality will still smack harder than a Bok forward pack. Sit down, mate
American rugby fan who's been following for a few months and still learning every time I watch...
Tonight at Ellis Park was a perfect reminder of how thin the margins are at the top.
The Springboks had early periods of control, the set-piece platform, and territory but they missed a bunch of opportunities. The All Blacks just capitalized better.
After watching earlier in the summer as a complete newbie I figured SA was unstoppable but now I see how little room for error there is.

The All Blacks strike first in The Greatest Rivalry Tour.
A huge second half from New Zealand sees them pull away from the Springboks to claim a 33–16 victory at Ellis Park and take the opening Test of the series.
The Springboks led 13–12 at half time, but the All Blacks took control after the break to secure a massive win in Johannesburg.
What did you make of that performance from the All Blacks?

The teams are locked in, and the stage is set for a massive opening Test at Ellis Park.
The Springboks and All Blacks renew one of rugby’s greatest rivalries today, with both sides looking to land the first blow and take control of the series from the start.
A packed Ellis Park, two heavyweight teams and 80 minutes of Test rugby between the biggest rivals in the game. This one has all the ingredients for an absolute classic.
Who walks away with the win in Test One?

A haka is a traditional Māori challenge performance, famously used by the All Blacks before kickoff.
Ma'a Nonu is 44, played 103 matches for New Zealand, and is now with @SharksRugby, a URC club in South Africa.
Cool moment:
Pitchside for one of the most special moments in rugby 👏
Ma’a Nonu steps forward to perform his own Haka at the Shark Tank against the All Blacks 🇳🇿

As an American just starting to get into rugby, here’s some recent knowledge I’ve acquired that might have made the sport easier for me to understand if I’d known it earlier.
I’ll add to this thread as I come across new stuff.
First: rugby is not organized around one main league.
That was probably the biggest mental unlock for me. You can’t really approach it like the NFL, NBA, MLB, etc., where there is one obvious top league and everything else sits underneath it.
Rugby has layers. There are club teams, national teams, domestic leagues, cross-border leagues, cup competitions, tours, international windows, development sides, and old historic competitions that still matter even when they are not the top commercial product anymore.
So instead of asking “what’s the league?” it helps to ask:
What country or region am I watching?
Is this club rugby or international rugby?
Is this a league match, a cup match, a tour match, or a friendly?
Are these full-strength teams?
Knowing it was kind of a free-for-all mess actually helped me understand it a little better.
Watching rugby: you can watch a bunch of live streams of various matches, and keep tabs on your favorite sides by following @RugbyPass . Lots of international matches are available on @paramountplus
