Unprecedented kleptocracy.
As a life long NYC resident & unfortunately a life long renter as well & now for 5 years a homeless citizen of this city suffering through the cycles of endless chaos.
The housing system here is & always has been unfair to families like mine.
Nobody deserves to sleep on the streets & especially no child should have to live a life this way.
no family should live & die in a homeless cycle of hell.
* It's time to change the rules *
#1 ) landlords should not be
allowed to refuse pets. These
are just animals to the majority
of the most landlords across
New York City & they rather
prospective tenants put the
pets in shelters to die just
because they don't want the
tenant to have pets , all the
while many of the landlords.
have their own cats and dogs.
The fact is most of us have
pets because they are life long
companions, they bring
comfort to our family, our
children, often times having a
pet gives renewed purpose to
our elderly family members
who are living alone.
Other times the pet is a dog
are not just as a companion but
to also protect our families.
Our pets are part of our family,
we pay rent to live our lives in
that apt being rented to us we
are not paying so we can just
exist in silence, sleep and go to
work with no sense of life or
family because we are all boxed up
with landlord imposed rules to keep
us in slave mode while being bound
by degrading & dehumanizing
leases.
#2 ) landlords should not be
allowed to control how we live
our daily lives. A landlord
should not have the right to tell
a tenant they cannot have
family or friends over without
permission from the landlord
or property management.
We are paying to live on the
property so why do landlords
get to say we can't have
company over without
permission? In some cases
the leases we get as tenants
say we must tell the landlord
who is coming over &
provide their name & ID
information & the license
plate of our guests.
Why should a landlord be able
to say a persons adult kids
can't sleep over for a visit or a
person who is dating can't
have a partner sleep over.
Landlords should not have the
right to control who comes to
visit our home we pay to live
in.
#3) landlords should not be
allowed to refuse a renter
because he or she is married or
has a child, while they
technically cannot do this
landlords most of the time do in fact
refuse to rent to couples
& families even if the apt is 2
or 3 bedroom.
They often drop hints in the ads
for the rental or when you get
there to view the apt they ask
how many people & when you
say you are married or have kids
they tell you the apt isn't a good
fit.
Landlords should be stopped
from refusing families to rent
from them or requiring only
single females to rent from
them.
#4) landlords should not be
allowed to force renters to
submit to inspections. We pay
to live there, & we should
have rights to privacy. The
landlord should not be allowed
to force stipulations such as
inspection to see how tenants
live.
#5) landlords should not be
allowed to request our private
information.
Landlords across NYC require
background checks, credit
checks, they require a copy of
your taxes & a list of your jobs
& where your children go to
school as well as a list of your
typical stores you shop at.
There are landlords in NYC that
require having access to your
boss at your job, they want a
report from your employer of
what kind of person you are.
The required private information
these landlords want just so we
can exist somewhere is past
intrusive.
The amount of potential landlords
I have encountered in nyc that would
show me other candidates id cards ,
social security cards they collect from
these applicants is crazy.
We have to give up our identity and all
of our privacy & the privacy of our family,
our children, just to rent an apt in nyc!
Landlords should be banned
from asking for private data.
only being allowed to ask for a
letter of employment to prove
income.
#6) the rent is too high in NYC.
Landlords keep increasing the
rent every month, every six
months & every year while
they abuse the residents who
are renting in NYC.
A landlords own private bills
are their own issues & they
should not be pushing the
costs onto tenants this
includes their mortgages, if a
person signed a mortgage then
they should have had the ability
to pay that monthly bill before
the bank gave the loan.
Tenants should not be forced
to pay a rent price that is
double or triple what the
landlords monthly mortgage
bill is just so the landlord can
pay their bill & then go on a
spending spree.
RENT in NYC should be CAPPED...
* studios - $600
* 1 Bedroom apts - $900
* 2 Bedroom apts - $1200
* 3 bedroom apts - $1500
* 4 bedrooms & houses - $1800
Landlords should not be allowed
to charge per person or require 2
or 300 extra per tenant.
There should also not be any 1.5
or 2 months security fee as most
NYC landlords especially in
Richmond county do this.
There should not be non
refundable pet deposits , there
should not be a pet deposit at all
since the security is part of
covering the damages if a tenant
does leave anything in bad shape.
#7 ) in NYC especially considering
many of landlords inherited
their wealth from properties
from relatives this is especially
true for Staten Island specifically the
south shore areas where they
already own a home &
inherited a second property &
are just using the excessive
rental income to live lavish
lifestyles.
There should be a website to
allow renters to report their
address & the landlord name
& post how much rent is
being charged with a copy of
the lease uploaded as a
picture.
The city should then run
checks on all submitted
properties & see if the property
owners are paying taxes on
these apt rental incomes.
The penalty for a landlord not
paying is currently unpaid tax
plus interest, civil penalties,
late-payment and late-filing/
underpayment penalties.
This is not enough & the
landlord not reporting the
income should be charged an
Extra $2,500.00 evasion
penalty per day the rental
income was not reported.
If they can't pay then the
property has to be sold within a
year to pay the cost or the city
seizes the property & converts
the property into a low income
rental property.
Tenants should get some sort of
payout for reporting landlords to
the website.
Property owners who decide to
stop renting because they don't
like the rules should be
penalized for contributing to the
housing crisis, $10k a year for
five years as a city housing crisis
penalty tax.
Staten Island has a lot of very wealthy
white landlords that have directly
contributed to the housing crisis
by the unfair leases, the bias when
picking tenants & the monstrous
rent costs & the continuing
protesting against social
services in the borough.
When these entitled wealthy
white folks complain their rich
white Republican
representatives push back
against any social services
programs on their side of the
borough, they consistently block
low income housing, shelters,
food pantries, drop in centers, etc...
On wild avenue in the Travis area
there are failing hotels & empty lots
& a nearly abandoned store plaza on
Travis avenue @ 141 east service rd.
The city could take over &
develop new sets of housing
projects having something like
500 units or more similar to
other housing projects in the
borough.
It would also help the new
tenants & breathe life into the
area if the ground level
being used as retail shop spaces
Bodegas , discount store, cell
phone stores, day care & job
trade training programs,
carpenter, , plumbing, auto &
diesel mechanic, computer

In the Roseville neighborhood

plaza where Pathmark once was.
2730 Arthur kill rd.
This could also be converted into
a new set of housing projects
with the same setup with ground
level store fronts, bodegas,
discount store, etc...
The city should stop caving into
bigots in the city & just start
building to end the housing
crisis.
Use eminent domain if need be.
In many parts of NYC you can
build affordable housing, in
Staten Island especially there
are so many abandoned &
empty lots , plazas etc..
the city could easily build 2 or 3 new
sets of housing projects and get
thousands of homeless families.

What about companies like gyms that lie to subscribers?
For example crunch gym here in NYC tells members to cancel use the website and send in a request and fill out the gym location and member information the alternative option is to in person to the front desk.
For anyone who uses the website the company lies and doesn't cancel the membership but then they send messages months later telling the former members to pay late fees and pay up for each month they believed they were no longer members. From that point on, this becomes the only way to "cancel".
The company says you can't cancel the membership unless your membership is paid up.
The problem is the person has already followed the original rules and submitted the cancel request to the main website so they believed they had cancelled, but now they are in a debt trap because the company waits 2 or 3 months before telling former members they are still members and must pay up.
It's a trap designed to force people into paying more money they don't have.
There really is no way to cancel a membership at most gyms because they all have similar traps.
If a member wants to cancel the membership and leave that gym the company should not be allowed to force you to pay extra fees and should have to accept a cancel request in person or on their website.
There should be penalties for gyms that try to trap people into continuous payments after they try to leave that company.
