🗣️ Owen Hargreaves: “Marcus Rashford has been the story of this first half, and unfortunately for him and for Manchester United, it’s not a positive one.

“He’s had chances that you simply cannot afford to miss at this level. When you’re playing as a centre-forward for Manchester United, you have to be ruthless. Rashford has been anything but that today.

“The worrying thing for Michael Carrick is that this is becoming a pattern. United are creating opportunities, but Rashford is not taking them. You can’t keep asking the team to carry a player who isn’t delivering in the decisive moments.

“Lammens has had to bail them out, and that tells you everything. United should be ahead, but instead they’re behind because of Lisandro Martinez own goal.

“And let’s be honest, Rashford playing 76 minutes for Manchester United in 2026 is a huge crime when you’ve got Shea Lacey and Joshua Zirkzee sitting on the bench. There are options available, and Carrick has to use them when a player is struggling this badly.

“Carrick has a huge decision to make at half-time. If he leaves Rashford on and he continues to miss chances, the pressure will become unbearable. If he takes him off, it will look like a clear admission that Rashford is no longer trusted in that role.

“But this is bigger than one substitution. If Rashford continues performing like this, he could be the end of Carrick at Manchester United. Managers don’t survive when their main attacking players repeatedly fail to deliver, especially when the team is dropping points because of it.

“Carrick needs energy, aggression and someone willing to attack every ball. I’d bring Rashford off for Lacey, move Cunha back to the wing and put Mbeumo through the middle. Zirkzee is also on the bench, and he should be considered if United need a different profile up front.

“Rashford has the talent, but talent means nothing if you don’t show it when the chances arrive. Today, he has let Manchester United down, and he may have put Carrick’s job in serious danger.”
