The scenes we witnessed last night on Southend Seafront and the City Centre were deeply disturbing and I know have caused concern for many residents.

I would like to thank Essex Police and the other emergency services for their efforts.

I am working closely with my colleague Bayo Alaba MP, Cllr Daniel Cowan, the leader of Southend City Council and the police to gain a greater understanding of what happened and how we can prevent similar scenes moving forward.

We will share more information when we have it. But in the meantime I would encourage residents not to speculate and allow the police investigation to take place.
