"Israel has signaled an opening toward Austria’s Freedom Party (FPÖ), which was founded in 1956 by former SS officers and members of the Nazi Party, after its leader Herbert Kickl apologized for Austria’s role in the Holocaust and pledged to move his country’s embassy to occupied Jerusalem.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar welcomed the remarks, calling them “an important and positive development,” and said Israel was seeking “a substantive, open and frank dialogue” with the party.

Israel had previously formally boycotted the FPÖ because of its Nazi history and ties to far right and neo Nazi networks. In his speech before the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Kickl condemned the October 7 operation, apologized for Austria’s role in the Holocaust, pledged to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism, and referred to the occupied West Bank as “Judea and Samaria.”
