2026 Sports in Kansas Defensive Player of the Year – Hailey Schmidtlein, Hayden (4A)

Hailey Schmidtlein, a sophomore, emerged as one of the most impactful underclassmen in Kansas, anchoring Hayden’s defense during a championship run.

The sophomore averaged 17.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.0 steals, 3.5 assists, and 2.0 blocks per game, showcasing her ability to impact every phase of the game. Her length, instincts, and versatility made her a difference-maker on the defensive end, consistently disrupting opponents and controlling the paint.

Schmidtlein played a key role in Hayden’s state title run, powering a team that took down defending champion Wellington in the semifinals before finishing the job against Bishop Miege in the finals.

“We had a true Cinderella story this year. No one expected us to make it as far as we did. The key to our success was more than just basketball, it was friendship and our team bond.”

Already with over 800 career points and a Division I offer from Murray State, Schmidtlein is one of the rising stars in Kansas basketball. Head coach Carvel Reynoldson was named 4A SIK COY. #sportsinkansas

@ebosshoops UMKC needs to make a decision if they want athletic programs. Massive overhaul in facilities and a commitment to winning. Like we tell kids going D1 just because it’s D1 doesn’t mean it’s better than D2. If Coach Ballard decides to move on he should be like choosy Coach McCollum
