I was in Port Alberni yesterday and got a tour of the community. One thing I always do is give someone struggling a few bucks. I know how much that meant to me when I was struggling. It shows people that you see them and you care. I know a lot of people don't agree with that. They think giving people money "enables" addiction.
But what if it can do the opposite?
Yesterday I gave a girl 20 bucks and she was over the moon. It opened up a conversation where she told me she’s currently homeless, and we talked about her desire to get back into treatment, which I encouraged her to do.
I give because I care. I don't want them to spend the money on drugs, but if they do I still want to help. The opposite of addiction is connection!
