We spend a lot of time asking what Alberta would need from Canada after independence.

Let’s ask the other half:

What would Canada need from Alberta?

Energy. Agriculture. Transportation corridors. Continued trade.

Canada already uses Alberta energy as leverage internationally.

Maybe it’s time Albertans understood the leverage we have too.

Canada needs Alberta too.

Treaty 8 was entered into in 1899 before Alberta existed as a province. At that time, what is now Alberta was part of the Northwest Territories and under federal/Dominion jurisdiction.

In 1905, Alberta became a province, meaning governance over the same territory changed in a major way. Then, in 1930, Canada transferred control of Crown lands, natural resources, mines, minerals and water to Alberta under the Natural Resources Transfer Agreement.

Those were profound jurisdictional changes. Yet Treaty rights were not extinguished or impacted by either event. That history matters.

Alberta independence does not threaten Treaty rights.

Keith Wilson dismantled the fear narrative around Alberta Independence live on CBC.

They asked about uncertainty.

He pointed straight back at Ottawa.

CBC didn’t seem eager to let him keep going.

Canada’s new “Canadian Identity” minister @s_guilbeault just deceived Canadians saying we don’t need more pipelines because the TMX pipeline is only 40% full and peak oil will be in 2 years.

The facts are that TMX, which just opened and would have been built entirely with private dollars if Ottawa hadn’t made it impossible for the original proponent to build it, is already close to capacity.

Further most estimates of demand for bitumen shows it growing for several more decades and that it will be needed to replace declining U.S. conventional oil fields.

This is just another example of how misleading and destructive this former environment minister was to Alberta’s and Canada’s economy and investment climate.

We ask for the new environment minister @juliedabrusin to disavow his comments and commit to working with Alberta to build new pipelines to access new markets.
