Trade Union Scandal: BIFU Under Pressure as Members Push for Audit Following Reports of Irregular Transactions and Misuse of Funds
Serious allegations of corruption and mismanagement have been raised against the Banking Insurance and Finance Union (BIFU), with a senior official accused of engaging in fraudulent dealings at the expense of union members.
The accusations center on claims that union subscriptions and membership records have been manipulated, raising questions about financial transparency within the organization.
Concerns have also been expressed over how negotiations with financial institutions are being handled, with claims that the union's leadership has been using its position to further personal interests rather than advocate for workers' rights.
A case involving a group of workers who were allegedly denied rightful representation despite meeting the union’s membership requirements has been cited as evidence of irregularities within BIFU.
Documents indicate that the workers had paid their monthly subscriptions for six months and received official union receipts, yet their membership was later disputed.
Despite acknowledging them as members, the union failed to support them in legal proceedings, leading to suspicions of a compromised process.
These concerns have led to calls for immediate action, with demands for the Registrar of Trade Unions to intervene and for a full audit of BIFU’s financial records.
A push to involve the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) in scrutinizing the union’s accounts has also been initiated, as members suspect that further irregularities could be uncovered.
In response to the allegations, efforts are being made to pressure financial institutions affiliated with the union to halt deductions until accountability measures are put in place.
There are also plans to involve the media in exposing how corruption within BIFU has allegedly influenced negotiations with employers to the detriment of union members.
With further investigations underway, those raising these concerns insist that the official at the center of the claims must be removed from office, arguing that his continued stay is a threat to the integrity of the union.
"Hello Cyprian.
Kindly highlight this as there is a lot of corruption going on at BIFU without members knowing. See attached documents.
The Registrar of Trade Unions, as an oversight body to this union, seems to be sleeping on their job. Alternatively, they must have been compromised because how can such criminal atrocities be committed by a senior member of the union and be left unpunished? There have to be consequences for such actions.
This Tom Odero should have been hounded out of that union like yesterday. He is the face of corruption in BIFU and a disgrace to the union.
(1) Other than writing to the Registrar of Trade Unions for action to be taken against this person because we have overwhelming evidence to support this case, we are also going to write and request an audit. We suspect that if they can do this, then there is more that can be revealed when an audit is done. We shall also be writing to KRA to come and audit the union's records. It is going to be a busy month and year for the union's officials and all of us.
(2) We shall also be writing to Kenya Bankers Association member banks, who happen to have members in the union, to stop deductions to the union.
(3) We shall involve the media just to show members how corruption is perpetuated by BIFU and, in particular, Tom Odero whenever they go for negotiations with member banks.
(4) We are also digging deep into the affairs of the union and, in particular, Mr. Tom Odero, to shed more light on this issue.
(5) We are also going to petition members just to strengthen the direction we are taking.
We shall demonstrate how corruption is perpetuated using the GIRO case as an example, as this has overwhelming evidence to support the case.
For instance:
(1) If indeed these people were not members of BIFU, how did they end up getting BIFU receipts for six consecutive months, and how did BIFU receive their monthly subscription fee?
(2) BIFU still went ahead and acknowledged them as their members after they signed the union membership form.
Rule No. 3A of the BIFU constitution states that BIFU only represents banks, insurance companies, SACCOs, financial institutions, and others, which is well elaborated in the constitution of BIFU.
(3) 3B states that every eligible person shall be required to pay an entrance fee of Ksh... upon application for membership, which these people did.
(4) 3C states that upon admission to membership, the member shall be bound by the constitution of BIFU.
(5) 3D states that under no circumstances shall any entrance fee paid to the union be refunded.
(6) 3H states that membership shall commence on the date of acceptance of the application for membership by the NGS.
(7) Rule 5A states that a member who has been a member of the union for a period of more than six consecutive months and whose subscription is not in arrears shall be entitled to receive the benefits, which in this case includes representation in the courts of law.
(8) BIFU still went ahead and acknowledged them as their members after they signed the union membership form.
(9) This matter was concluded by way of a consent which BIFU entered with the bank and acknowledged in that consent that they were BIFU members. Why then were they issued with two different letters from Securex and the bank, having worked for the same period of time?
(10) BIFU wrote to the bank HR in regard to the check-off order.
(11) BIFU went ahead and wrote to the Ministry of Labour for conciliation.
Everything about BIFU in this matter is just shrouded in corruption, and the main culprit is none other than Mr. Thomas Odero, a.k.a. Tom Odero. It is just disgusting.

Relative poverty is about envy. It’s a spiritual rather than economic problem and will always be with us.
