Responding to the announcement by the Prime Minister of his resignation, FBU general secretary, Steve Wright said:
"Whoever replaces Keir Starmer needs to be clear that the status quo has to change. The reason we find ourselves with yet another PM standing down is that, like May, Johnson, Truss and Sunak before him, Starmer failed to break with the perceived wisdom of attacking public services, failing to tackle wealth inequality, whilst letting privatised public utilities rip off the people of this country. A new Labour leader needs to learn that lesson and learn it fast.
"For FBU members, this means stepping in to end the threat of fire station closures that puts our members and the public's lives at risk. There needs to be investment in the fire and rescue service alongside other public services, and as an affiliated trade union, we will be putting that position before any candidate in a leadership election.
"We cannot have more of the same. If we do, then whoever is elected will inevitably have failed in their role and will be out of office at the earliest opportunity.
"The chance to break with the narrative of the past is now, learn the lessons that previous Prime Ministers failed to do and deliver a better future for our members and the people of this country."
RMT responds to Keir Starmer announcing resignation timetable
Transport union RMT, has called for the Labour government to radically change course, after Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced a timetable to stand down.
Speaking from the union’s AGM, Eddie Dempsey, RMT general secretary said: “Andy Burnham who has declared his intention to stand for the vacancy in 10 Downing Street, said this Labour Government has one ‘last chance to change’ and to ‘end trickle down economics.’
“We agree and that means intervening in the economy to expand public ownership, to raise wages, improve living standards and for the state to intervene to help working class people, not hang them out to dry at the mercy of market forces.
“Only by working with trade unions, radically improving the lives of ordinary people and securing the economy to serve them, can the Labour government have any hope of winning the next general election.
“The new Prime Minister will need to seize the opportunity to make Great British Railways a success by speeding up its roll out and ending the scourge of outsourcing.
“Our members will expect nothing less.”
RMT confirms further strike action in Carlisle Support Services pay dispute
RMT members employed by Carlisle Support Services, working on the Northern rail contract will continue their long-running dispute over pay by taking 48 hours strike action from Saturday.
The action follows Carlisle Support Services' continued refusal to negotiate a proper pay settlement through collective bargaining, despite increasing demands being placed on frontline staff including gate line operatives and revenue officers.
Picket lines will take place at:
Saturday 20 June – Skipton Station, 8am to 10am
Saturday 20 June – Manchester Victoria Station, 11am to 1pm
Sunday 21 June – Manchester Victoria Station, 11am to 1pm
Carlisle Support Services has recently claimed that it has "honoured our agreement to implement an annual pay uplift in line with the Living Wage increase".
RMT has rejected that claim, making clear that the increase is not the result of any negotiated agreement with the union but stems from the company's commitment as an accredited Living Wage employer.
RMT General Secretary Eddie Dempsey said: "Carlisle Support Services is attempting to present its Living Wage Foundation obligations as though they are the product of negotiations with RMT. That is simply not true.
"The annual Living Wage uplift is a commitment Carlisle made when it chose to become a Living Wage employer. It is not a pay rise negotiated through collective bargaining and it does not resolve this dispute.
"Our members working on the Northern contract perform vital frontline railway roles. They keep stations safe, assist passengers and protect railway revenue, all while facing increasing responsibilities and pressures on a daily basis.
"These workers deserve a fair, negotiated pay settlement that reflects the value of the work they do. Instead, Carlisle has sought to rely on a minimum commitment it already had while refusing to engage meaningfully with the union on pay.
"This dispute is about respect, recognition and fair reward for a workforce that plays a critical role on the railway.
"The whole episode underlines why all outsourced rail workers should be taken in-house as part of the future of Great British Railways as soon as possible."
Massive congratulations to @pcs_union on this victory!
Brilliant campaigning by @FranHeathcote and so many PCS members won this.
Labour promised the "biggest wave of insourcing in a generation" and we are going to ensure that's delivered!
The scale of the cuts to journalism at the BBC threatens the station’s ability to report the news & provide the expert analysis of the issues our community faces both here and across the globe. It’s a huge mistake. https://t.co/5ztNDrZGG3
More brutal BBC cuts will be devastating for workers and audiences. With the charter renewal on the horizon, now is the time to strengthen the BBC’s future, not weaken it.
Thank you to @Chris_EvansMP for raising the scourge of violence and abuse faced by public transport workers in his Westminster Hall debate, and RMT’s call for stronger legal protections for public transport workers against assault at work.
Importantly, Chris highlighted the disparity that will arise now that the Scottish Govt has committed to introducing a standalone offence, this will mean that public transport workers in Scotland will have stronger legal protections than those in England and Wales. We agree with Chris that this is unacceptable and call on the UK Govt to extend these protections so all public transport workers are protected.
Huge congratulations to @pcs_union on this landmark win!
Labour promised the "biggest wave of insourcing in a generation" and thanks to the tireless work of PCS members, we're seeing that promise become a reality ✊
Landmark result for @pcs_union, with the government insourcing 2,000 catering staff, security officers, cleaners & porters to improve working conditions and service delivery.
The government must extend this approach to other outsourced services that could be better run in-house.
The govt promised a wave of insourcing - delivering that for govt facilities management is the right thing for taxpayers and for staff.
I thank @RachelReevesMP and pay tribute to @The_TUC and @pcs_union.
This should be the first step in a broader wave across public services.
Laura Davison, NUJ general secretary, said:
“This constant cycle of cuts and cost-saving must end [...] The BBC cannot provide quality journalism without the talented and experienced workers who make it possible.”

We need a redistribution of economic power, so that workers can secure decent wages and working conditions, through public investment, and through the public ownership of critical sectors of our economy.

💭 After months of negotiation and very careful consideration, the FBU Executive Committee overwhelmingly recommends acceptance of this year's pay deal. We recognise that longer term pay reform is a priority for our members, this will be the focus of our work over the coming weeks and months.
Please urge your MP to support this parliamentary motion from @grahamemorris calling for the Labour Government to reinstate Prison Officers' fundamental human right right to strike.
